Virgibacillus salarius sp. nov., a halophilic bacterium isolated from a Saharan salt lake

Abstract: A Gram-positive, endospore-forming, rod-shaped and moderately halophilic bacterium was isolated from a salt-crust sample collected from Gharsa salt lake (Chott el Gharsa), Tunisia. The newly isolated bacterium, designated SA-Vb1 Here we report the taxonomic description of a moderately halophilic, Gram-positive, rod-shaped bacterium, strain SA-Vb1 T , which represents a novel species of the genus Virgibacillus.Strain SA-Vb1T was originally isolated from a mixture of dry sediment and salt crusts collected direct… Show more

“…These chemotaxonomic properties are commonly found in other members of genus Virgibacillus (Arahal et al, 1999(Arahal et al, , 2000Heyrman et al, 2003;Quesada et al, 2007;Hua et al, 2008). The strain contained anteiso-C 15 : 0 (44.01 %), anteiso-C 17 : 0 (41.30 %), iso-C 15 : 0 (6.12 %), iso-C 16 : 0 (4.89 %), iso-C 17 : 0 (1.56 %) and iso-C 14 : 0 (1.04 %) in the cellular fatty acid profile (Table S1).…”

“…The major polar lipid components of strain S1-20 T (diphosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylglycerol) were the same as those of the nearest phylogenetic neighbours, V. necropolis (Heyrman et al, 2003), V. carmonensis (Heyrman et al, 2003) and V. arcticus (Niederberger et al, 2009). However, phosphatidylethanolamine as one of the major polar lipid components was found in other species of this genus, such as V. soli (KĂ€mpfer et al, 2011), Virgibacillus salarius (Hua et al, 2008) and Virgibacillus dokdonensis (Yoon et al, 2005).…”

“…At the time of writing, the genus comprised 14 recognized species, i.e. Virgibacillus pantothenticus (Heyndrickx et al , 1999, Virgibacillus proomii (Heyndrickx et al 1999), Virgibacillus carmonensis, Virgibacillus necropolis, Virgibacillus marismortui, and Virgibacillus salexigens (Heyrman et al 2003), Virgibacillus halodenitrificans (Yoon et al 2004), Virgibacillus dokdonensis (Yoon et al 2005), Virgibacillus koreensis (Lee et al 2006), Virgibacillus olivae (Quesada et al 2007), Virgibacillus halophilus , Virgibacillus chiguensis , Virgibacillus kekensis and Virgibacillus salarius (Hua et al 2008). During an investigation of the microbial diversity of Naozhou Island, Leizhou Bay, South China Sea Xiao et al 2009), a moderately halophilic strain, designated JSM 089168 T , was isolated from a saline soil sample.…”
