Viral arthritis/tenosynovitis: A review

Abstract: A review if presented of viral arthritis/tenosynovitis, one of the clinical manifestations of avian reovirus infection in chickens. Since the detection of a viral etiology of arthritis/tenosynovitis in 1957, the disease has been reported in various parts of the world. Pathological features of the disease include inflammatory lesions in the extensor and flexor tendons and tendon sheaths of the posterior limbs and in the tibiotarsal joints. Hepatitis, myocarditis, hydropericardium, as well as intestinal and resp… Show more

“…They are the cause of viral arthritis syndrome, also known as tenosynovytis, characterized by joint swelling and lesions of the gastrocnemius tendon. Inflammatory changes in tarsometatarsal joints and nearby tendon sheaths results in joint swelling 4,5 . Rupture of the gastrocnemius tendon and degeneration of the articular cartilage may occur in the course of serious forms of the disease and may cause bleeding within the joints resulting in greenish coloration of the skin.…”

“…Avian reoviruses have been recovered from chickens with several disease manifestations, the most important of which appears to be tenosynovitis or viral arthritis (van der Heide, 1977;Olson, 1978). Other conditions include cloacal pasting (Deshmukh and Pomeroy, 1969), ulcerative enteritis (Krauss and Ueberschar, 1966), hydropericardium (Spradbrow and Baines, 1974;Jones, 1976), anaemia with liver and spleen lesions (Vielitz and Landgraf, 1974) and respiratory diseases (Fahey and Crawley, 1954;Simmons and Lukert, 1972).…”
