Seroprevalence of Avian Reovirus Infections in Chickens in Western Provinces of Turkey

Abstract: SummaryIn this study, seroprevalence of avian reovirus (ARV) infections in broiler and broiler breeder chicken farms in Aydin, İzmir and Manisa provinces were investigated. Serum samples (n = 631) collected from 8 broiler breeder and 18 broiler flocks were tested for ARV antibodies using a commercially available ARV Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) kit. The sampled flocks were not vaccinated against ARV. The blood samples were taken at the time of slaughtering. Antibodies were found in all flocks test… Show more

“…In this study, we observed a 98.3% prevalence of ARV infection based on ELISA similar to the ARV prevalence reported in Iran (98.3%) 18 , and higher than the prevalence reported in Romania (85.5%) 19 , Turkey (70.6 to 77.2%) 20 and Nigeria (41%) 21 . The IDEXX ELISA kit plates are coated with a whole virus lysate and detect “total” antibody response, therefore the kit is not strain-specific and highly cross reactive to a wide range of pathogenic and non-pathogenic ARV strains.…”

“…To date, very few studies on seroprevalence of ARV in backyard chickens have been conducted worldwide. The present study’s findings showed that the seroprevalence of ARV is very high (94.4%), which agrees with reports from western Turkey (86.53%) (Erol & Sengül 2012 ) and Korea (100%) (Jae-Kyo et al 2019 ). Lower ARV seroprevalences were reported from Zimbabwe (3%) (Kelly et al 1994 ).…”

“…It might be happen because long-term antibody is developed as a result of constant reinfection of virus subclinically in broiler breeder [13]. Erol and Sengul [24] also observed higher antibody titer in broiler breeder against ARV in Turkey. Seropositivity of ARV was higher in the age of 4-6 weeks than other two age groups.…”
