Viewpoints: A Framework for Integrating Multiple Perspectives in System Development

Abstract: This paper outlines a framework which supports the use of multiple perspectives in system development, and provides a means for developing and applying systems design methods. The framework uses "viewpoints" to partition the system specification, the development method and the formal representations used to express the system specifications. This VOSE (viewpoint-oriented systems engineering) framework can be used to support the design of heterogeneous and composite systems. We illustrate the use of the framewo… Show more

“…Requirements engineering is concerned with eliciting and analyzing problems, and finding, implementing, and evaluating the solutions [25,47]. Furthermore, an important aspect of requirements engineering is its multidisciplinary nature [14]. Requirements engineering acknowledges that different people are involved, each with a different background and view on the system to be developed.…”

“…Requirements engineering acknowledges that different people are involved, each with a different background and view on the system to be developed. So for proper requirements engineering, multiple perspectives have to be taken [14,25]for example, a business and ICT perspective. From a requirements engineering point of view, these perspectives must represent the same system.…”

“…In some approaches such as the OpenViews framework [19], two views are consistent if a design can be found that is a refinement of both views. Other approaches, such as Viewpoints [20], consistency requirements are defined in terms of rules, which are specified as queries on the database that contains the viewpoints. The database performs then the consistency checks, using first-order logic.…”

“…Many other viewpoints have been proposed. Also others, such as Nuseibeh et al [10] and Finkelstein et al [3], have advocated the use of viewpoints for describing architectures.…”
