Abstract. After more than a decade of research in Model-Driven Engineering (MDE), the state-of-the-art and the state-of-the-practice in MDE has significantly progressed. Therefore, during this workshop we raised the question of how to proceed next, and we identified a number of future challenges in the field of MDE. The objective of the workshop was to provide a forum for discussing the future of MDE research and practice. Seven presenters shared their vision on the future challenges in the field of MDE. Four breakout groups discussed scalability, consistency and co-evolution, formal foundations, and industrial adoption, respectively. These themes were identified as major categories of challenges by the participants. This report summarises the different presentations, the MDE challenges identified by the workshop participants, and the discussions of the breakout groups.

In the context of MDE (Model-Driven Engineering), our objective is to define the semantics for a given DSL (Domain Specific Language) either to simulate its models or to check properties on them using model-checking techniques. In both cases, the purpose is to formalize the DSL semantics as it is known by the DSL designer but often in an informal way. After several experiments to define operational semantics on the one hand, and translational semantics on the other hand, we discuss both approaches and we specify in which cases these semantics seem to be judicious. As a second step, we introduce a pragmatic and instrumented approach to define a translational semantics and to validate it against a reference operational semantics expressed by the DSL designer. We apply this approach to the XSPEM process description language in order to verify process models.

Software organizations are nowadays facing increased demand for modernizing their legacy software systems using up-to-date technologies. The combination of Model-Driven Development and delivery models like Cloud and Software as a Service have become a very promising approach for software modernization that possesses a lot of advantages, including great deal of automation and reuse of system functionality. However, the use of such new and immature technologies is very challenging and requires a comprehensive methodology for their seamless application within the software modernization projects. When developing such methodology, questions on whether agile methods and techniques should be incorporated and what could be the benefits and implications from that become of particular interest. To help answering these questions, the paper evaluates the potential of agile methods and techniques to address the challenges of Model-Driven Modernization. The challenges are extracted through a systematic review of the existing body of literature on Model-Driven Development and Software Modernization, and the evaluation is conducted through the Delphi technique. As a result, a ranked list of applicable agile techniques is proposed and suggestions for their use in Model-Driven Modernization are made.
