The growth in users streaming videos on the Internet has led to increased demand for improved video quality and reception. In next generation networks (NGNs), such as 3G and 4G LTE, quality of service (QoS) implementation is one of the ways in which good video quality and good video reception can be achieved. QoS mainly involves following an industry-wide set of standard metrics and mechanisms to achieve high-quality network performance in respect of video streaming. Adopting routing and communication protocols is one way QoS is implemented in NGNs. This article describes QoS of bit rate video streaming, and QoS performance analysis of video streaming, in relation to the main network transport protocols, namely transmission control protocol (TCP) and user datagram protocol (UDP). A simulation test bed was set up using OPNET modeller 14.5. In this setup, a network topology was created and duplicated three times, in order to configure two simulation scenarios (each using the distinct protocols), and a third simulation scenario using both protocols in hybrid form. The findings in the simulations indicated that, when a network is configured with both TCP and UDP protocols in video streaming, there is a positive change in the degree of performance in terms of the QoS of videostreaming applications, unlike when the protocols are used independently.Keywords quality of service (QoS), bit rate video streaming, QoS routing, transmission control protocol (TCP), user datagram protocol (UDP)

Abstract-Layered video coding creates multiple layers of unequal importance, which enables us to progressively refine the reconstructed video quality. When the base layer (BL) is corrupted or lost during transmission, the enhancement layers (ELs) must be dropped, regardless whether they are perfectly decoded or not, which implies that the transmission power assigned to the ELs is wasted. For the sake of combating this problem, the class of inter-layer forward error correction (IL-FEC) solutions, also referred to as layer-aware FEC (LA-FEC 1 ), has been proposed for layered video transmissions, which jointly encode the BL and the ELs, thereby protecting the BL using the ELs. This tutorial aims for inspiring further research on IL-FEC/LA-FEC techniques, with special emphasis on the family of soft-decoded bit-level IL-FEC schemes.

Network coding (NC) techniques for lossy wireless networks have been used for fault-tolerant and timely delivery of streaming video data. Recent research on inter-session NC notwithstanding, reliable transmission of high quality media over wireless networks continues to be a challenge. The effects of traffic and network dynamics on coding block size and thereby on latency added at playback were studied, and the interaction of congestion control on the coding technique to remedy this were examined. Simulations show an inherent latency in video playback when TCP with random linear NC is employed as the receiver needs to wait for a certain number of packets to arrive before they are decoded. This paper presents an adaptive NC algorithm based on the nature of video streaming traffic and the available transmission opportunity to improve streaming performance with lower latency and reduced jitter in case of streaming TCP traffic. This algorithm is constructed under the constraint of available transmission opportunities and arriving traffic. The simulation results corroborate that the proposed adaptive NC algorithm reduces observed latency at playback by more than 90% over traditional TCP and more than 60% over simple NC technique. Additionally, the observed jitter reduced by 70% over only TCP and about 60% over fixed bucket size NC. To demonstrate the utility of our approach, the proposed algorithm was compared with TCP's performance for a real-world video trace. Results from this experiment indicated an 80% reduction in end-to-end latency.
