Abstract-Scalable video streaming over femtocell networks relying on two-tier spectrum-sharing is designed for coping with time-varying channel conditions, stringent video QoS requirements as well as with strong cross-tier interference between the over-sailing macro-and the femtocells. Dynamic video layer selection and resource allocation are invoked to enable the adaptation of the scalable video streaming service to the dynamics of both channel quality and interference price fluctuations. We formulate the design as a constrained stochastic optimization problem, which strikes a compelling compromise between the perceivable quality of experience and the monetary implications of the interference. Since the time scale of resource allocation is more short-term than that of the video layer selection, we decompose the original long-term utility optimization problem into a pair of readily tractable subproblems with the aid of two different time-scales by invoking the powerful technique of Lyapunov drift and optimization. By exploiting the specific structure of these subproblems, low-complexity algorithms are derived for dynamic video layer selection and resource allocation, which rely on the near-instantaneously available information rather than on any prior statistical knowledge. Finally, we derive the analytical bounds of the theoretically achievable performance. Experimental results are presented for characterizing the performance attained.

Abstract-Holography is considered to be one of the most promising techniques of goggle-free visualization of the nearfuture. We consider wireless transmission of digital holograms, which are partitioned into multiple bitplanes that are then independently encoded by a forward error correction (FEC) code for transmission over wireless channels. The coding rates of these bitplanes will be optimized at the transmitter for the sake of achieving an improved holographic peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) at the receiver. Our simulation results show that up to 2.6 dB of E b /N0 or 12.5 dB of PSNR improvements may be achieved, when employing a recursive systematic convolutional (RSC) code.

Abstract-In order to counteract the explosive escalation of wireless tele-traffic, the communication spectrum has been gradually expanded from the conventional radio frequency (RF) band to the optical wireless (OW) domain. By integrating the classic RF band relying on diverse radio techniques and optical bands, the next-generation heterogeneous networks (HetNets) are expected to offer a potential solution for supporting the ever-increasing wireless tele-traffic. Owing to its abundant unlicensed spectral resources, visible light communications (VLC) combined with advanced illumination constitute a competent candidate for complementing the existing RF networks. Although the advantages of VLC are multi-fold, some challenges arise when incorporating VLC into the classic RF HetNet environments, which may require new system architectures. The user-centric (UC) design principle for VLC environments constitutes a novel and competitive design paradigm for the super dense multi-tier cell combinations of HetNets. The UC concept may be expected to become one of the disruptive techniques to be used in the forthcoming fifthgeneration era. This paper provides a comprehensive survey of visible-light-aided OW systems with special emphasis on the design and optimization of VLC networks, where the radically new UC design philosophy is reviewed. Finally, design guidelines are provided for VLC systems.
