The purpose of this research is to analyze the causes of student dropout in a university extension of the University of Panama. It suggests a non-experimental design based on a quantitative approach. It is nonparticipatory, analytical and descriptive. The population includes students who dropped out during the years 2017 to 2020, (n=142). The sample is purposive. However, only 45 persons completed the questionnaire. The questionnaire of Díaz and Tejedor, (2017) called CADESUN was applied. The questionnaire has been validated both nationally and internationally. The technique of expert judges was applied with a rating of 0.99 (content validation) and piloting that reached a Cronbach's Alpha of 0.99, so it was relevant to analyze the phenomenon in a new context. It was possible to verify that the separate analysis of the relevant variables yields valuable results. For the analysis as a whole, the extension emphasizes an Organizational or Institutional Model followed by the Economic Model, causing student dropout.

Esta variable ha sido ya retomada por otras investigaciones (Abarca y Sánchez, 2005;Castaño et al, 2006;Castillo, 2010;Cruz, Gática, García y Hernández, 2010;Merlino et al, 2011;Regueyra y Rojas, 2013). The phenomenon of dropout, by its complexity and educational and social impact, has been extensively studied to understand the specific causes. In this line of research, the purpose of this study was to analyze explanatory and predictive models of student dropout from university studies at the Instituto Tecnológico de Costa Rica (TEC), based on many variables recorded in the institutional system indicators. The first stage of the analysis considered multinomial regression models to identify the influence of these variables on the dropout. In the second analysis, six machine learning algorithms were evaluated in order to find a model that would predict student dropout. Data analysis showed that the probability of dropping out is related to sociodemographic variables, study program, academic history, scholarship and other benefits, and performance after first semester. In addition, the best predictor of dropout algorithm was the “random forest”, a probability of 0.83 to predict the dropout correctly and to capture 34% of the actual student dropout. These results are the first step toward building a more robust predictive model of dropout, which will contribute to preventive decision making in this university.
