Variability of Vernier acuity measurements in untrained subjects of different ages

Abstract: The Vernier acuity of 50 normal untrained subjects (20 males and 30 females) was measured by the method of adjustment. Subjects were divided into five age ranges with 10 subjects in each age group: 5-10, 11-20, 21-30, 31-40, and 41-50 years. All subjects had normal visual acuity (20/20) and volunteered to participate in the experiment. Children were selected from a local school and adults recruited from the technical staff of the Department of Ophthalmology of the School of Medicine. Vernier acuity was higher … Show more

“…This type of design allowed for the parsing of the within-and betweenperson variance in occasion reading vision, in addition to the coupling relationship between reading vision and cognitive performance. Although previous research examining intraindividual variability in vision is limited, the results are similar to what has been found in the literature (e.g., Abbud & Cruz, 2002;Fisher & Carr, 1970). Specifically, we observed that a substantial amount of variability in occasion reading vision is due to the within-person variation.…”

“…It is also possible that a one time assessment of vision might not be very reliable. In fact research has shown that vision does fluctuate over relatively short periods of time (Abbud & Cruz, 2002;Fisher & Carr, 1970).…”

“…In the subjective validation experiment, participants made an average error of 0.30 arcmin, corresponding to twice the objectively determined precision, and smaller than the expected Nyquist limit of 0.43 arcmin for a foveal cone density of 200,000 cells/mm2 [36], but slightly higher than the typically found average Vernier acuity of 0.19 arcmin [37] and 0.25 arcmin [38]. Because we did not observe any systematic displacements across the three participants, we conclude that the subjective validation confirmed the current calibration process.…”
