Variability of Physicochemical Properties of Water of the Transboundary Poprad River

Abstract: Surface waters may be polluted by substances originating from anthropogenic sources [Grochowska and Tandyrak 2007, Bojakowska et al. 2010, Húska et al. 2013] and due to natural processes occurring in the environment [Moniewski and Stolarska 2007]. Natural sources may comprise various pollutant agents, such as plant remnants and humus substances, clay and silt particles of soils or rocks, compounds of iron and manganese, etc. However, pollution caused by various human activities is far more dangerous to the env… Show more

“…As there are many different sources of pollution, the potential of water to be reclaimed and to restore its quality, different for various forms and types of environmental water, is amazing. Due to its nature and constant rotation, flowing water is most quickly reclaimed as a result of intense self-purification [Bogdał et al 2012, Policht-Latawiec et al 2015] that is a set of complex physical and chemical processes lowering the concentration of dissolved chemicals.…”

“…Processes of the accumulation of the sediment cause the variety of negative effects; such as loss of the reservoir storage capacity due to siltation and affecting of the biota and ecological water quality [Ahmed and Sanchez 2011, Pradhan et al 2011, Jurík et al 2015. However, pollution caused by various human activities is far more dangerous to the environment [Policht-Latawiec et al, 2015] as the sediments are ultimate source of potential chemical and biological pollutants. [Apitz et al, 2005].…”

“…Progressing degradation of surface water prompted implementation of a number of measures to restrict the inflow of pollutants [Policht-Latawiec et al 2015]. In order to improve the quality of surface waters the EU countries have introduced a common policy of water quality monitoring in the river basin areas [Molina-Navarro et al 2014, Murat-Błażejewska and Sojka 2011, Sojka and Murat-Błażejewska 2009].…”
