Values of organic materials as fertilizers to northern Nigerian crop production systems

Abstract: Organic materials, the combined products of different animal and plant sources, play vital roles in agricultural crop production systems. They are more environmental friendly than inorganic fertilizers and added many values to soil and crop production, economically. They sustain and restore soil inherent properties, enhance soil biological activities and potentially increase crop yields, which are safe for human consumption (that is, free from chemicals). This paper aims to discuss the values of organic materi… Show more

“…Entries in Table 5 reveal major perceived benefits of using organic fertilizer in growing garden egg to be; its environment friendly nature (2.99 ± 1.23) as well as improvement of soil fertility (2.95 ± 1.12). These findings are consistent with previous studies by [16,20,22] that application of organic matter to the soil could also improve aggregate stability and resistance to soil compaction, enhanced fertility and reduced nutrient leaching, increased biological activity, enhance water retention capacity and reduction of greenhouse gases by soil carbon sequestration. Constraints of using organic fertilizer in garden egg production.…”

“…necessary that we adopt organic farming over chemical fertilizer farming (Usman et al, 2016). Application of suitable rates of N, P, and K fertilisers can boost soil Cu, Zn, and Mn availability, as well as Cu, Zn, Fe, and Mn concentrations in wheat (Li et al, 2007).…”

“…To increase agricultural productivity, peasant farmers in Nigeria and other Africa countries rely often on the use of organic materials as soil improvers without adequately following the strict guidelines stipulated for the use of these wastes in agriculture; at present, the common organic materials use in Nigeria are compost, cow dung, sheep dung, pig and poultry manures, groundnut cake, Neem cake, human excreta, urine, sewage sludge and unused materials from abattoir [18,27,28]. Table 1 presents the information on the organic fertilizers that were considered for this study.…”
