In a demand context of mass customization, shifting towards the mass personalization of products, assembly operations face the trade-off between highly productive automated systems and flexible manual operators. Novel digital technologies—conceptualized as Industry 4.0—suggest the possibility of simultaneously achieving superior productivity and flexibility. This article aims to address how Industry 4.0 technologies could improve the productivity, flexibility and quality of assembly operations. A systematic literature review was carried out, including 234 peer-reviewed articles from 2010–2020. As a result, the analysis was structured addressing four sets of research questions regarding (1) assembly for mass customization; (2) Industry 4.0 and performance evaluation; (3) Lean production as a starting point for smart factories, and (4) the implications of Industry 4.0 for people in assembly operations. It was found that mass customization brings great complexity that needs to be addressed at different levels from a holistic point of view; that Industry 4.0 offers powerful tools to achieve superior productivity and flexibility in assembly; that Lean is a great starting point for implementing such changes; and that people need to be considered central to Assembly 4.0. Developing methodologies for implementing Industry 4.0 to achieve specific business goals remains an open research topic.

El artículo presenta la aplicación de la Ingeniería Concurrente integrando el diseño para la calidad (QFD) y el diseño para la manufactura y ensamble (DFMA), en la fabricación de una herramienta mecánica para el desmonte de una turca-corona de una excavadora sobre orugas. El estudio se desarrolló debido a la necesidad que tuvo el Departamento de Mantenimiento de una empresa de extracción de carbón, en desarmar una transmisión de propulsión de la excavadora hidráulica RH340B para reparar alguna de sus partes en mal estado. El análisis se basó en que el diseño de esta herramienta cumpliera con las especificaciones del torque necesario para el desarme del sistema. Se concluye que a través de los métodos aplicados da como resultado un diseño de 26 piezas, con valores aceptables en la eficiencia del ensamble y en el factor de complejidad. Además, la herramienta fabricada fue de gran ayuda para desarmar el mando final, pues su fabricación local consiguió que se ahorrara casi un 75% de los costos de inversión que exigía la adquisición de una herramienta original de TEREX|O&K.

Nowadays many companies are applying the lean philosophy and value stream mapping (VSM) tool to eliminate and reduce losses and show possible places for further implementation of the lean concept. Since the system change takes place as a consequence, it is very useful to confirm the future system design performance before the actual implementation. This paper presents an application of VSM and computer simulation in a company for manufacturing and distribution of heating, cooling and neutral equipment for catering and trade industry. To improve the quotation creation process, the product configuration system is introduced. The performance of the new system design was confirmed using the discrete event simulation. Simulation results show several performance improvements. Conducted simulation experiments emphasize the better performance of new system design in terms of the accepted quotations, resource utilization, delivery time, work in process, non-value-added time and number of required operators.
