Two extremely urgent problems of biological and agronomic research nowadays are ensuring an optimal balance between usage of natural resources to meet rapidly growing needs for food production and preservation of biodiversity. It is also important to extend the genetic diversity of the main crop varieties in agroecosystems. At the same time, modern varieties should be characterized by a combination of high yield and preserving yield stability under variable conditions. Solving the outlined tasks requires comprehensive research and involvement in breeding process of the genetical diversity concentrated in genebanks of the world. Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) is one of the most important crops that satisfy the various needs of humanity. In respect to this, in 2020–2022, a multi-environment trial was conducted in three agroclimatic zones of Ukraine (Forest-Steppe, Polissia, and Northern Steppe). We studied 44 spring barley collection accessions of different ecological and geographical origin, different subspecies and groups of botanical varieties which were obtained from the National Center for Plant Genetic Resources of Ukraine. Statistical indices (Hom, Sc) and graphical models (GGE biplot, AMMI) were used to interpret the yield performance and its stability. Both individual ecological sites in different years and combinations of different sites and years of trials were characterized for productivity, discriminating power and representativeness. The environments differed quite strongly among themselves in terms of these indicators. It was established that most of the genotypes were characterized by higher adaptability to individual environmental conditions (stability in different years), compared to adaptability for all agroclimatic zones (wide adaptation). A strong cross-over genotype by environment interaction was found for most studied accessions. Nevertheless, both genotypes with very high stability in only one agroclimatic zone (Amil (UKR), Gateway (CAN)) and genotypes with a combination of high adaptability to one or two ecological niches and relatively higher wide adaptability (Stymul (UKR), Ly-1064 (UKR), Rannij (KAZ), Shedevr (UKR), and Arthur (CZE)) were identified. There were also the accessions which did not show maximum performance in the individual sites, but had relatively higher wide adaptability (Ly-1059 (UKR), Ly-1120 (UKR), Diantus (UKR), and Danielle (CZE)). In general, the naked barley genotypes were inferior to the covered ones in terms of yield potential and wide adaptability, but at the same time, some of them (CDC ExPlus (CAN), CDC Gainer (CAN), and Roseland (CAN)), accordingly to the statistical indicators, had increased stability in certain ecological sites. Among naked barley accessions relatively better wide adaptability according to the graphical analysis was found in the accession CDC McGwire (CAN), and by the statistical parameters CDC ExPlus (CAN) was better than standard. The peculiarities of yield manifestation and its variability in different spring barley genotypes in the multi-environment trial revealed in this study will contribute to the complementation and deepening of existing data in terms of the genotype by environment interaction. Our results can be used in further studies for developing spring barley variety models both with specific and wide adaptation under conditions of different agroclimatic zones of Ukraine. The disitnguished accessions of different origin and botanical affiliation are recommended for creating a new breeding material with the aim of simultaneously increasing yield potential and stability, as well as widening the genetic basis of spring barley varieties.

Aim. To evaluate the effectiveness of breeding methods used in the development of Kharkiv spring barley cultivars in order to determine their feasibility and results rating. Materials and Methods. Fifty spring barley cultivars bred in Kharkiv by various methods over 112 years (1910−2021) were studied. The feasibility and effectiveness of methods of analytical (individual selection), combinational (hybridization), and mutational (chemical and radiation mutagenesis) spring barley breeding as well as of their combinations at different stages of the breeding development were evaluated by the number of cultivars registered for production. Results and Discussion. It was established that the analytical spring barley breeding via individual selection from heterogeneous local accessions worked poorly: within 24 years (1910−1933), only three cultivars were registered (on average, one cultivar per 8.12 years); within the following 37 years (1934−1970), two cultivars selected from accessions of the world collection were registered (one cultivar per 18.5 years); and within 61 years of intensive selections in total (1910−1970), only five cultivars were registered (on average, one cultivar per 12.2 years). The breeding via hybridization of accessions with similar characteristics was unsuccessful for a long time (47 years; 1924-1970). Combinational breeding via hybridization became the most effective method in terms of the number of registered cultivars (39 cultivars within 51 years; (1971-2021); on average one cultivar per 1.39 years) after starting materials with contrasting characteristics were involved in crossing. The mutational breeding via chemical and radiation mutagenesis methods was also effective: five mutant cultivars were registered within 15 years (1988−2002) (on average, one cultivar per three years). Conclusions. The efficiency of breeding in terms of the number of registered Kharkiv spring barley cultivars was evaluated: the combinational breeding via crossing genotypes with contrasting characteristics showed the highest efficiency; the mutational breeding via chemical and radiation mutageneses to create genotypes with new characteristics was also highly efficient; and the analytical breeding via individual selections of available genotypes from heterogeneous populations of local and collection, accessions was hardly efficient: on average, one cultivar was registered within 1.39, 3.00 and 12.20 years, respectively, that is, there was an 8.78- and 4.07-fold increase in the efficiency with combinational and mutational breeding, respectively.

The present study aims to elucidate the peculiarities of yield performance and stability of spring barley cultivars in the multi-environment trial. Thirty six spring barley cultivars widespread in production conditions of Ukraine were tested in three different natural zones in three years. The strong cross-over genotype by environment interaction was revealed not only through different natural zones, but also in individual ecological niches in different years. The cultivars with high yield and stability have been identified. The most adapted to the conditions of Forest-Steppe were the cultivars MIP Bohun, MIP Myrnyi, MIP Saliut, MIP Azart; of Polissia - Avhur, MIP Myrnyi, Mirazh, Skarb, Alehro; of Steppe - Skarb and Sviatomykhailivskyi, Alehro, Krok, Statok. The cultivars MIP Myrnyi, Skarb, Avhur, MIP Saliut, and MIP Bohun could be highlighted as genotypes with relatively wide adaptability. Thus, the combination of these cultivars in production conditions can be considered as the most optimal for all natural zones of Ukraine. Our results also contribute to the further understanding the yield performance of spring barley in the genotype by environment interaction depend on different environmental and weather conditions. The cultivars distinguished in this study have a high value in plant breeding as genetic sources for developing new spring barley strains with increased adaptive potential for conditions of Ukraine and some other East European countries.
