Value of bone marrow examination in Hodgkin lymphoma: Report of three cases with review of literature

Abstract: Bone marrow involvement by Hodgkin lymphoma is rare with an average incidence of 10%. However, the incidence of bone marrow involvement has been shown to be less than 1% in patients with clinical stage IA or IIA disease. The involvement of the marrow in a patient with Hodgkin lymphoma represents stage IV disease. We report our experience wherein three cases of marrow involvement were picked up on bone marrow aspirates/ -imprints and confirmed on trephine biopsy. In this paper we wish to highlight the significa… Show more

“…BM necrosis and fibrosis were seen in one case each. BM necrosis and fibrosis are findings often associated with BM infiltration of Hl and, when present, should raise the suspicion of BM involvement in a given case (1,7,12 (10). all these data suggest that doing BM staging only in high risk patients might not be sufficient.…”

“…Pancytopenia is less common as compared to Monocytopenia and bicytopenia in MDS. In a study by Kini J et al on MDS patients, bicytopenia was the commonest finding [18]. Cryptococcal involvement of bone marrow is very rare.…”

“…In the present study none of the case of HL showed bone marrow. The results were compared with the results of study done by Bartl et al 30 in which BMI was reported in 10% of cases, Ellis et al 31 in which BMI was observed in 7.1% of cases, Marisavljevic et al 32 in which BMI was in 10.2% of cases, Howell et al 33 in which BMI was in 5.2% of cases, Kini et al 34 in which BMI was in 10% cases and Mondal et al 16 in which BMI was in 9.3% of cases. The present study was done on the limited number of 60 cases of lymphoma and out of these 60 cases only 7 cases were of HL.…”
