ABSTRACT Values, Altruism and Helping Behaviors: Comparing Donors and Non-Donors of BloodHelping behavior and altruism are actions for the wellbeing of others, which vary in degree of delivery and are fundamental to interpersonal relationships. Therefore, knowing what motivates such behaviors might contribute to the understanding of human nature and to develop interventions that promote pro-social behaviors. This study aimed to know to which extent human values correlate with these constructs in groups of donors and non-donors of blood. Participants were 142 people from the general population (age: M=27, SD=19.93; 60.6% female), equally composing both groups (donors and non-donors). Through an ANOVA, the extent to which the scores of these groups differ from each other was evaluated. It was observed that donors are more altruistic and present a greater amount of helping behavior, besides presenting significant correlations to values that characterize a universal orientation. These findings are discussed based on the functional theory of human values.Keywords: Altruism; helping behaviors; donation; human values. RESUMEN Valores, Altruismo y Comportamientos de Ayuda: Comparando Donantes y No-Donantes de Sangrep[l]Las conductas de ayuda y el altruismo corresponden a acciones en favor del bienestar del otro, variando con respecto al grado de entrega y siendo fundamentales para las relaciones interpersonales. Por lo tanto, saber qué motiva estas conductas puede contribuir para comprender la naturaleza humana y desarrollar intervenciones que promueven conductas prosociales. Este estudio ha tenido como objetivo conocer en qué medida los valores humanos se correlacionan con estos constructos en grupos de donantes y no donantes de sangre. Participaron 142 personas de la población general (edad: M=27, DT=19.93; 60.6% mujeres), divididas por igual en dos (donantes y no donantes).Por medio de un test de ANOVA se evaluó en qué medida las puntuaciones de estos grupos se difieren con respecto a los constructos estudiados. Se observó que los donantes son más altruistas y presentan más conductas de ayuda, y que sus puntuaciones en estos constructos se correlacionaron con valores que caracterizan una orientación universalista. Se discuten estos hallazgos teniendo en cuenta la teoría funcionalista de los valores humanos.Palabras clave: Altruismo; conducta de ayuda; donación; valores humanos.

Intraregional Migration in Latin America: Psychological Perspectives on Acculturation and Intergroup Relations.

immigrants have been associated with prostitution, thefts, and high rates of violence (Zuker, 2018); Indigenous Peoples are seen as primitives, lazy, and treacherous (M. E. O. ; and Northeasterners are commonly associated with poverty, low schooling, and closed-mindedness (Hofstede et al., 2010). Fortunately, however, the endorsement of these stereotypes and consequent prejudiced attitudes toward members of these minority groups vary among individuals, likely as a reflection of their distinct axiological principles and socio-ideological orientations. This chapter contributes to understanding intraregional migration and intergroup relations in Latin America by testing a model to explain prejudiced attitudes and, eventually, promote actions to mitigate prejudice toward minority groups. Our model focuses on two core constructs that are central in social psychology: human values (Gouveia, 2016;Maio, 2017) and broad socio-ideological attitude dimensions indexed by right-wing authoritarianism (RWA) and social dominance orientation (SDO), which have been shown to be the primary determinants of prejudice-related outcomes (Sibley & Duckitt, 2008;Sidanius & Pratto, 2001). The chapter starts with a brief overview of the sociohistorical context and theoretical models underpinning the empirical study conducted to test the proposed theoretical framework. BRIEF SOCIOHISTORICAL OVERVIEW OF MIGRATION AND INTERGROUP RELATIONS IN BRAZILBrazil has continental dimensions and vast regional diversity (e.g., settlement histories, climatic conditions, socioeconomic development, and cultural orientations). It is the fifth biggest country in the world both in terms of territory and population and occupies half of South America. In its 5 centuries as a country, Brazil has experienced migratory movements. Colonized by the Portuguese in the 16th century, Brazil has a population comprising six major groups: Indigenous Peoples (mainly from Tupi and Guarani language groups), Portuguese, Africans, other Europeans, Middle Easterners, and Asian immigrant groups. Migration and intergroup relations in Brazil thus include the colonization process of its Indigenous Peoples by the Portuguese, who then brought Africans as slaves and settled them mainly in the Northeast and Southeast regions of the country. This study aimed to confirm the multifactorial structure of the Beliefs Toward Cure of Homosexuality Scale (BTCHS) - (ECCH in Portuguese) and to verify evidence of its validity based on external variables. To this end, two studies were carried out. In Study 1, there were 214 university students, with an average age of 24 years (SD = 9.15). These students answered the HCBS and demographic questions. The results indicated a satisfactory fit for multifactorial modeling. Study 2, in turn, presented 430 university students with an average age of 23 years (SD = 7.90). In addition to the HCBS, the participants responded to the measures of sexual prejudice (MSP) and attitudes towards gays and lesbians (ATGL) questionnaires. Performing correlation analyses between the variables, we found significant correlations between the HCBS and the MSP and ATGL. In conclusion, the HCBS presented an adequate data-model fit for its multifactorial structure and evidence for its validity based on external variables.
