Validity of the Ages and Stages Questionnaire to detect risk of Developmental Coordination Disorder in preschoolers

Abstract: Early identification of motor skill delays is important in order to intervene and hopefully prevent the associated negative health consequences. However, because of the low sensitivity of the ASQ-3 motor scales, these results suggest that the ASQ-3 is not an appropriate screening tool to identify children at risk for DCD in the preschool population.

“…Several studies have explored the reliability and accuracy of ASQ‐3 scores in identifying suspected developmental delay, including examination of the ASQ versus other developmental delay measurement tools (Gollenberg et al ; Limbos & Joyce ; Rydz et al ). Many have found excellent value with the ASQ‐3 while some have not (King‐Dowling et al ). Limbos and Joyce () found that the ASQ‐2 had a consistent and moderate sensitivity and specificity across age groups, using the American Academy of Pediatrics's recommended ages for screening.…”

“…The study of motor development is a prerequisite for the full understanding of children's evolution, in which movement is an integral part of life 1 . Therefore, motor assessment is important and necessary in preschool individuals 2 and has been explored in several national [3][4][5][6][7] and international studies [8][9][10] .…”

“…Consequently, assessment results and accurate diagnoses have been studied in recent years. 1,2 Currently, the term DCD is well known and commonly used in the field of learning difficulties in childhood and throughout life. DCD has been considered a major health problem among school-aged children worldwide, 3,4 resulting in significantly negative effects on their ability to fully participate in daily activities at home and in school or in playing games.…”
