Validation of direct and indirect measures of preference for sexualized violence.

Abstract: Individuals differ in the extent to which they are interested in sexualized violence as displayed in the frequent but not ubiquitous sexual interest in consensual acts of violent sexual roleplay and violent pornographic media in the normal population. The present research sought to develop and validate a multi-method asessment battery to measure individual differences in the preference for sexualized violence (PSV). Three indirect measures (Implicit Association Test, Semantic Misattribution Paradigm, Viewing T… Show more

“…Thus, a considerable variety of conceptually different indirect measures tapping into (deviant) sexual interests has been developed (Snowden, Craig, & Gray, 2011;Larue et al, 2014;Schmidt, Banse, & Imhoff, in press). In the present study, three indirect latency-based measures of sexual orientationincluding a newly developed task-will be compared, representing two conceptually different types of indirect measurement rationales: task-relevant and task-irrelevant indirect latencybased measurement of sexual orientation (Schmidt et al, in press).…”

“…Several of our measures, such as the SMRA and the FAI scales are face valid, and participants may have been hesitant to openly endorse sexually explicit and/or such low social desirability items despite our efforts to emphasize and protectanonymityandconfidentiality.Further, theSMRAhasnot been widely used in the literature and the FAI was created especially for this study. It should also be noted that the dichotomous nature of the FAI (endorsing yes or no for each behavior or fantasy) is a limitation as someone with a single fantasy or behavior would still indicate true for an item without regard to the frequency or persistence of such episodes.Future investigations may benefit from assessing the frequency and nature of behaviors/ fantasies and their subsequent relation to the aforementioned trait characteristics to further clarify the nature of the relationship between these variables, especially as the endorsement of various paraphilic and coercive behaviors and fantasies varies by modality of measurement, gender, and perhaps other various trait characteristics (e.g., Dawson et al, 2014;Larue et al, 2014). Future research should focus on measuring other correlates of coercive and SM sexual activity.…”
