Validating an Instrument for Measuring Newly Graduated Nurses’ Adaptation

Abstract: A long-established approach, Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) is used to validate measurement models of latent constructs. Employing CFA can be useful for assessing the validity and reliability of such models. The study adapted previous instruments and modified them to suit the current setting. The new measurement model is termed NENA-q. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) revealed the instruments of the NENA-q model formed a construct of the second order with four dimensions, namely organizational contributio… Show more

“…Organisational culture influenced newly graduated nurses’ adaptation more than proactive values [ 51 ]. Nevertheless, it is believed that a proactive personality is essential when adjusting favourably to an organisation and community [ 73 ]. Likewise, a proactive personality facilitates a nurse’s adaptation to becoming an insider.…”

“…A proactive personality eases the nurse’s adaptation to becoming an insider. This aids newly graduated nurses in actively seeking knowledge and understanding organisational culture and standards, developing resilience, and coping with stressful situations, and reduces turnover rates [ 45 , 72 , 73 ]. As the proactive value is closely related to hardiness, the characteristics of this trait are not specific.…”

“…The CFA determined that all latent constructs, i.e. OC, AIC, PT, and NENA, met the construct validity and passed the convergent and discriminant validity [23]. Once the model had been validated, the measurement model was converted into a structural model to perform the SEM.…”

“…Composite Reliability (CR) was calculated on Microsoft Excel using formulae given by Fornell and Larckers [30]. Values of CR of more than 0.6 indicate good construct reliability and adequate convergent validity [31].…”

“…Cronbach's alpha values between 0.7 and 0.9 are considered to represent high internal consistency and values between 0.6 and 0.7 are considered as satisfactory [32]. Similarly Composite reliability was also calculated with >0.6 having high internal consistency [31].…”
