Objective:To evaluate the effects of using a flipchart (serial album) on maternal self-efficacy in breastfeeding and its effects on exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) in children's first two months of life. Method: Clinical trial in Recife, Northeastern Brazil, with 112 women in the third trimester of gestation, randomly distributed in intervention group (IG) and control group (CG). The intervention was the use of the flipchart in IG. Data collection was performed through interviews in the prenatal period, and telephone contact at second, fourth and eighth weeks postpartum. The Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale-Short-Form (BSES-SF) was used to measure self-efficacy scores. In the analysis, was used descriptive, bivariate statistics through tests of comparisons of proportions and means, and relative risk assessment. Results: There was a statistically significant difference in mean values of self-efficacy scores between women in the IG and CG (p<0.001) and in EBF rates (p<0.001). The probability of exclusively breastfeeding in IG was twice as high than in CG (RR 2.2, CI 1.51-3.21). Conclusion: The use of a flipchart as an educational tool had positive effects on self-efficacy scores for breastfeeding and in maintenance of EBF in the IG. Objetivo: establecer el concepto de tecnología blanda-dura en las prácticas de enfermería. Materiales y métodos: estudio reflexivo, con aplicación del método de análisis conceptual de Walker e Avant, que utiliza los siguientes pasos: selección de un concepto; determinación de los objetivos de análisis, de los atributos definidores; identificación de un caso modelo y contrario, e identificación de los antecedentes y las consecuencias. El estudio se llevó a cabo desde la búsqueda en bases de datos de las producciones científicas disponibles en ambiente virtual, en el periodo de abril y mayo de 2014. Resultados y discusión: inicialmente, el concepto de tecnología estaba relacionado al de técnica; con el del tiempo, sufrió cambios y pasó a relacionarse con los aspectos subjetivos y objetivos del cuidador. La tecnología blanda-dura sobrepasa los conocimientos tecnológicos estructurados y presenta libertad que les permite a los profesionales diversas posibilidades de acción. El uso de tecnologías en el cuidado de la enfermería es capaz de promover la salud e intensificar el vínculo entre profesional y cliente. Conclusión: el método de Walker e Avant posibilita demarcar los aspectos y la formación de un concepto desde atributos, antecedentes y consecuentes, además de analizar la utilización de los términos en la práctica.

PurposeTo evaluate the perception of breastfeeding self-efficacy in puerperal women and to verify the association between Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale-Brazilian Version (BSES-VB) scores and sociodemographic and obstetric variables. The practice of breastfeeding is of extreme importance, not only because of its affective value but also because the nutritional composition of human milk is essential nutrients for the adequate growth and development of the newborn.Design and methodsThis is a quantitative and cross-sectional study. The sample consisted of 100 puerperal women. The research instruments used were form with demographic, economic, obstetric and breastfeeding data and the BSES-VB.Results40% of the mothers obtained scores compatible with average breastfeeding self-efficacy, 35% of them presented high efficacy and 25% low efficacy. There was no significant relationship between sociodemographic and obstetric variables with the BSES-VB mean scores in the puerperal period. In the association between some variables and items of the breastfeeding self-efficacy scale, it was observed that breastfeeding guidance in the prenatal period and marital status were statistically significant with the mean scores of each item on the scale.ConclusionOnly 35% of the puerperal women presented high breastfeeding efficacy. Breastfeeding guidance variables in prenatal care and marital status were statistically significant.Practice implicationsthe work of the professionals who work in the care of puerperal women becomes of great importance to provide information on the breastfeeding theme and determining the adherence to the practice of breastfeeding.
