Vagococcus martis sp. nov., isolated from the small intestine of a marten, Martes flavigula

Abstract: A novel coccus-shaped, Gram-stain-positive, non-motile and facultative aerobic bacterium, designated strain D7T301T, was isolated from the small intestine of a marten, Martes flavigula, which was killed on the road in Pocheon-si, Gyeonggi-do, Republic of Korea. Grown on a tryptic soy yeast agar plate, colonies had a creamy colour and irregular form. The new isolate formed a monophyletic clade with Vagococcus penaei CD276T on a phylogenetic consensus tree based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence. The isolate grew op… Show more

“…Tolerance to tellurite and pyruvate utilization were determined as described by Miyashita et al [33]. The cell-wall peptidoglycan amino acids were extracted according to the method of Hasegawa et al and developed as described by Tak et al [34, 35]. Distinctive features among strains 73-4 T , 247-3 T , 143-4(a) T , 33-1 T , 143-6 T , 247-4 T , 17-4 T , 143-1 T , 735-2 T , M1530-1 T and phylogenetically related species are shown in Tables 6–10, and more features are presented in the species description and Table S10.…”

“…Tolerance to tellurite and pyruvate utilization were determined as described by Miyashita et al [9]. The cell-wall peptidoglycan amino acids were extracted according to the method of Hasegawa et al and developed as described by Tak et al [56,57]. Distinctive features between strain 1206-1 T and type strains of phylogenetically related species are shown in Table S5.…”

“…Since its division from the genus Lactococcus in 1989 [1], the genus Vagococcus has expanded to include 14 validly published species, including Vagococcus fluvialis [1–3], Vagococcus salmoninarum [4], Vagococcus lutrae [5], Vagococcus fessus [6], Vagococcus carniphilus [7], Vagococcus elongatus [8], Vagococcus penaei [9], Vagococcus acidifermentans [10], Vagococcus entomophilus [11], Vagococcus humatus [12], Vagococcus martis [13], Vagococcus teuberi [14], Vagococcus bubulae and Vagococcus vulneris [15]. The cell characteristics of members in the genus Vagococcus are: Gram-stain-positive; coccus-shaped; and C 16 : 0 and C 18 : 1 ω9 c as the major cellular fatty acids.…”
