UV-PEDD photometry dedicated for bioanalytical uses

Abstract: Detection of p-nitrophenol, a product of several enzymatic reactions, is useful and important in many fields of modern bioanalytics. Here, we have developed and applied a complete photometer dedicated for such measurements that is extremely economic and easily customized for specific experimental setups. The instrument consists only of paired emitter-detector diodes (PEDDs) coupled with an extremely simple and low-cost signal transduction system. The experimental data confirmed that this photometric system ada… Show more

“…The current literature and research results have established LEDs as visible light/optical [11][12][13] and diagnostic X-ray [14] detectors. In applications [11][12][13], two LEDs were employed (one LED as a light emitter and the other as a detector of the light emitted by the first LED) in the form of a paired emitter detector diode (PEDD). Besides, the comparison of blue and red LED emission and sensitivity spectra discovered drift of the LED detection sensitivity to shorter wavelengths-for both the tested LEDs [11].…”

“…In the other sensitivity enhancement approach, the LED sensitive/active area was increased by increasing the number of LED chips. In both sensitivity augmentation methods, our LEDs were in the photovoltaic configuration-similar to elsewhere [12,13]. Stated otherwise, we did not apply any biasing voltage to the LEDs.…”

“…As shown elsewhere [22, 23], PEDDs are easily applicable as flow-through detectors in various flow analysis systems. Thus, PEDD-based detectors could be easily miniaturized and integrated with separation chromatographic or electrophoretic devices potentially leading to dedicated analytical tools useful for determination of selected Hb fractions recognized as specific markers for diabetes [24, 25], thalassemia [26, 27], etc.…”

“…The electromotive force (EMF) signal generated by the sensor was recorded using an ordinary multimeter from Voltcraft (model VC820, Germany) connected via an RS-232 interface to data storage PC. The use of low internal resistance voltmeter offers significant enhancement of sensitivity [810]. …”
