Utilization of bowstring hemp fiber as a filler in natural rubber compounds

Abstract: ABSTRACT:The cure characteristics and physicomechanical properties of natural rubber (standard Nigerian rubber) vulcanizates filled with the fiber of bowstring hemp (Sansevieria liberica) and carbon black were investigated. The results showed that the scorch and cure times decreased, whereas the maximum torques increased, with increasing filler loadings for both bowstring hemp fiber and carbon black filled vulcanizates. The tensile strength of both bowstring hemp fiber and carbon black filled vulcanizates incr… Show more

“…Basically, fillers are grouped into two types, namely reinforcing and non-reinforcing fillers. Reinforcing fillers improve the modulus and strength of the rubber products, whereas, non-reinforcing fillers have little or no effect on the rubber properties (Osabohien and Egboh 2007). There are varieties of fillers available and used commercially in the rubber industry.…”

“…They are widely distributed throughout the tropics. In Nigeria, the leaves and roots of Sansevieria liberica are used in traditional medicine for the treatment of asthma, abdominal pains, colic, diarrhea, eczema, gonorrhea, hemorrhoids, hypertension, monorrhagia, piles, sexual weakness, snake bites and wounds of the foot (Gill, 1992;Osabohien and Egboh, 2008;Adeyemi et al, 2009). The sedative and anticonvulsivant activities of the roots have been studied by Adeyemi et al (2007).…”

“…Cáñamo: Para el mezclado de la carga con el caucho natural se empleó un molino de dos rodillos, se emplearon formulaciones donde la carga varía desde 0 hasta 70 phr; la temperatura del proceso se mantuvo por debajo de los 80°C y el curado de los compuestos se realizó por compresión en una prensa a temperaturas entre 110 y 180°C (Stelescu et al, 2014;Osabohien and Egboh, 2008).…”
