Utilización de servicios sanitarios por parte de las poblaciones inmigrante y nativa en la Comunidad Autónoma de la Región de Murcia

Abstract: In this paper we show that the remarkable differences in the age-gender balance among different (in terms of nationality) groups of insured residents in Murcia has a considerable effect on consumption of health services and therefore on the average health care expenditure attributable to these groups.

“…The results of this study agree with the results of similar studies on the use of hospital services [31][32][33] , consumption of pharmaceuticals 18,20 and the use of PC services 34 in Spain published before. The literature review done by Uiters 24 found a lower rate of visits in the immigrant population, but showed wide variability between studies.…”

“…This could lead us to conclude that immigrant children would use hospital emergency services more often than Spanish children. However, several studies on the frequency of the use of emergency hospital services by immigrants conclude that this rate is not higher than the one found among Spanish nationals [31][32][33] . Along these lines, a study of the frequency of use of paediatric emergency services in the Hospital Universitario Miguel Servet (the reference centre for many of the HCC under study, which receives most of the paediatric emergency cases in Zaragoza), shows that immigrant children use these services less frequently than native children 19 .…”

“…Respecto al uso de los servicios sanitarios, conocemos que las tasas de utilización de la población autóctona de las consultas externas, urgencias, hospitalizaciones y visitas a la atención primaria son más elevadas que las de los inmigrantes 4,5 . Es necesario analizar concretamente el impacto que supone la atención de esta población.…”

“…The use of dermatology [ 175 , 176 ], dental [ 177 ] and other specialist services [ 172 ] was lower in HAs vs locals and an economic analysis found that the health “expenditure” generated by this population was below the local average [ 174 ]. Findings regarding the use of emergency services in Spain show some inconsistent results with reports of HA men resorting to emergency services more [ 172 ] and less [ 174 ] frequently than locals. Still, qualitative inquiries suggest that emergency services are preferred for practical reasons [ 183 ] and may be used for non-urgent conditions by HAs who are not entitled to see a family physician [ 178 ].…”
