In this paper we study the relationship between unions and growth in a two-sector overlapping generations model with altruism and human capital. This relationship depends on the interaction between the technology in the sector that produces human capital, the degree of unionization of the economy and the operativeness of the bequest motive.¤ We are grateful to Jordi Caballé, Javier Caballero, Xavier Raurich and Carles Solà. In this paper we show that the remarkable differences in the age-gender balance among different (in terms of nationality) groups of insured residents in Murcia has a considerable effect on consumption of health services and therefore on the average health care expenditure attributable to these groups.
In this paper we estimate the economic impact of cruise tourism with an application to the Port of Cartagena, Spain. As a novelty, we build on a newly available Regional Input-Output framework. This allows us to compute the indirect and induced effects of cruise ship visits, which adds to the direct effects obtained from survey data. Results identify the total impact in terms of employment, wages, gross operating surplus and value added. Methodologically, the use of Regional Input-Output (IO) Tables improves the accuracy of previous methodologies building on country IO Tables. Results of the investigation provide important policy recommendations to the public and private stakeholders in order to manage this rising activity.
This research considers observed migratory flows as a source of information for the preferences of individuals. Using data on global migration flows from 2005 onwards, the extent to which the structure of the international migration system is consistent with an implicit ranking of countries is examined. Moreover, by assuming that migrants' decision‐making is guided by utility maximization, we interpret the scores of the ranking as a measure of subjective well‐being or happiness. After this, the estimated scores are associated with a set of factors usually considered key drivers of happiness. Empirical results suggest that income is the most relevant predictor of happiness and this relationship is non‐linear.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
