Arrabidaea chica Verlot (crajiru) is a plant used in folk medicine as an astringent, anti-inflammatory, wound healing and to treat fungal and viral diseases such as measles chickenpox and herpes. Arrabidaea chica has several morphotypes recognized but little is known about its chemical variability. In the present study the anthocyanidin profile of A. chica morphotypes collected in two seasons (summer and winter) have been examined and their activity against Leishmania infection compared. High-performance liquid chromatography coupled to a diode-array detector (HPLC-DAD-UV) and by tandem mass spectrometry with electrospray ionization (ESI-MS/MS) were used for anthocyanidin separation and identification. Antileishmanial activity was measured against promastigote forms of Leishmania amazonensis. Multivariate analysis, principal component analysis (PCA) and Pearson’s correlation were performed to classify morphotypes accordingly to their anthocyanidin profile. The presence of 6,7,3′,4′-tetrahydroxy-5-methoxyflavylium (3′-hydroxy-carajurone) (1), carajurone (2), 6,7,3′-trihydroxy-5,4′-dimethoxy-flavylium (3′-hydroxy-carajurin) (3) and carajurin (4), and three unidentified anthocyanidins were detected. Two different groups were recognized: group I containing 3′-hydroxy-carajurone; and group II with high content of carajurin. Among anthocyanidins identified in the extracts, only carajurin showed significant statistical correlation (p = 0.030) with activity against L. amazonensis. Carajurin could thus be considered as a pharmacological marker for the antileishmanial potential of the species.

The species Arrabidaea chica (Humb. & Bonpl.) B. Verl. (Bignoniaceae) is a plant native to tropical forests, popularly known as pariri or crajiru, and it is widely used in folk medicine to treat inflammatory diseases, anemias, skin diseases and to assist in the treatment of leukemia. Because of the widespread use of the plant, concern with its quality and effectiveness is fundamental. This study demonstrates the application of mass spectrometry with ionization by paper spray (PS-MS) as a chemical characterization method to evaluate the presence of the active principles in teas prepared by infusion from commercial samples of the medicinal plant Arrabidaea chica by infusion. The analyses of the samples were performed in two periods: 24 hours and 15 days after the preparation of the teas. Compounds referring to the class of substances 3-deoxythocyanidins were detected without any pre-treatment of the sample or chromatographic separation to provide valuable information for the evaluation and quality control of this product. Significant changes in the m/z signals of greater intensity, referring to the class of 3-deoxythocyanidins, were observed in the mass spectra, and multivariate analysis corroborated the degradation of this class of substances with time, resulting in a probable loss of the quality and effectiveness of the tea.

As folhas foram submetidas a secagem pulverizando água e secando em local com ausência e presença de luz; pulverizando água e secando em estufa a 40ºC com ventilação forçada; pulverizando água em diferentes períodos do dia e secando ao sol; expondo por um período mais longo ao sereno e ao sol neste estudo observamos que as folhas ficavam mais vermelhas, também observou-se a hidrólise dos compostos glicosilados quando secos com pulverização de água (Figueira et al2009, Cabral, 2010. Em escala laboratorial, durante o projeto (07/52739-9) também foram testados os alto vácuo e concentração em evaporador rotativo de capacidade de 20 L, garantido maior rapidez no processo de extração (Figura 6).…”

Não sei se a vida é curta ou longa para nós, mas sei que nada do que vivemos tem sentido, se não tocarmos o coração das pessoas. Muitas vezes basta ser: colo que acolhe, braço que envolve, palavra que conforta, silêncio que respeita, alegria que contagia, lágrima que corre, olhar que acaricia, desejo que sacia, amor que promove. E isso não é coisa de outro mundo, é o que dá sentido à vida. É o que faz com que ela não seja nem curta, nem longa demais, mas que seja intensa, verdadeira, pura enquanto durar.
