Palavras-chave: Recursos Vegetais, Comunidade tradicional, Plantas medicinais.ABSTRACT: Popular use of medicinal species of the Verbenaceae family in Brazil. The current work aimed to conduct a literature review about the Verbenaceae family species used in popular medicine in different regions of Brazil. The academic papers employed for the preparation of this research were taken from journals indexed by the Scielo published from 2000 to 2012, and a research in Google scholar tool was also performed. The data were compiled and organized alphabetically by species, followed by the popular name, manner of use, employed part, indications and study area. A total of 85 publications indicating 55 species were found and distributed into eight genera. The species with the highest number of citations was the Lippia alba (Mill.) N.E.Br., with 56 records. From the plants described in the literature, the leaf was the most cited part of the vegetables, and the tea was the most widely used preparation method. Among the categories of medicinal recommendations, the highlighted plants were the ones related to the treatment of diseases of the respiratory and the digestive systems. It was observed that Rio de Janeiro was the state in which the largest number of publications in the area was concentrated. The use of medicinal plants is increasingly present among several communities. Thus, the information in this work will be applied to assist in database development on how to use the plants belonging to the family Verbenaceae with medicinal potential found in Brazilian states. The Atlantic Forest and Caatinga ecosystems differ in terms of biodiversity and geoclimatic conditions but are similar in their rich socio-diversity and heterogeneity of vegetation types that comprise their floras. The objectives of this work were to map the ethnobotanical studies that have been conducted in these ecosystems and record the most investigated communities, regions, and vegetation formations related to this research. A literature review was made of ethnobotanical articles related to the use and knowledge of medicinal and food plants employed by local populations within the original territories of the Caatinga and Atlantic Forest. The areas with the highest concentrations of studies (Southeast and South regions in the Atlantic Forest and the states of Pernambuco and Paraíba in the Caatinga) reflect the presence of research groups in these regions. Until now, it was thought that ethnobotanical studies had been conducted throughout the Atlantic Forest and Caatinga; however, the results of this work show that both ecosystems contain areas that still need to be studied. Key words: ethnobotany, food plants, literature review, medicinal plants.
Antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities of the hexane extract from Hortia brasiliana Vand. leaves were investigated by experimental animal models. Guaiol (9.72%), nonacosane (25.57%) and eicosane (10.80%) were the most abundant components identified by GC/MS. The extract, with LD 50 of 2.40 g/kg, reduced the number of abdominal contortions by 13.86 (100 mg/kg) and 18.51% (200 mg/kg). Doses of 100 and 200 mg/kg inhibited both phases of the time paw licking: First phase (9.44% and 16.32%) and the second phase (11.97 and 23.49%), respectively. The extract increased the reaction time on a hot plate at doses of 100 (24.92%) and 200 mg/kg (55.69%) after 90 min of treatment. The paw edema was reduced by the hexane extract at doses of 100 (10.42 and 8.23%) and 200 mg/kg (15.62 and 17.65%) after 3 to 4 h of application of carrageenan, respectively. At the dose of 200 mg/kg, the extract reduced the exudate volume by 19.44%, while the leucocyte migration was inhibited at the doses of 100 and 200 mg/kg (6.13 and 13.84%, respectively). These results suggest that H. brasiliana can be an active source of substances with antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities supporting the use in the Brazilian folk medicine.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
