The fuzzy logic admits infinite intermediate logical values between false and true. With this principle, it developed in this study a system based on fuzzy rules, which indicates the body mass index of ruminant animals in order to obtain the best time to slaughter. The controller developed has as input the variables weight and height, and as output a new body mass index, called Fuzzy Body Mass Index (Fuzzy BMI), which may serve as a detection system at the time of livestock slaughtering, comparing one another by the linguistic variables "Very Low", "Low", "Average ", "High" and "Very High". For demonstrating the use application of this fuzzy system, an analysis was made with 147 Nellore beeves to determine Fuzzy BMI values for each animal and indicate the location of body mass of any herd. The performance validation of the system was based on a statistical analysis using the Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.923, representing a high positive correlation, indicating that the proposed method is appropriate. Thus, this method allows the evaluation of the herd comparing each animal within the group, thus providing a quantitative method of farmer decision. It was concluded that this study established a computational method based on fuzzy logic that mimics part of human reasoning and interprets the body mass index of any bovine species and in any region of the country.

R E S U M OO uso racional de energia elétrica em creches suínas pode ser viabilizado sem afetar o desempenho produtivo dos animais visando à sustentabilidade do setor razão por que o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a eficiência de duas tecnologias de controle de temperatura em sistema de aquecimento resistivo em creche suína, no uso de energia elétrica e no ganho de peso dos leitões. Os sistemas avaliados foram: resistências elétricas suspensas com controle PID (proporcional, integral e derivativo) e resistências elétricas suspensas com termostato. O experimento foi realizado durante o período de inverno, entre maio e setembro de 2013. Os critérios de comparação foram: consumo de energia elétrica (kWh), consumo específico (kWh kg ). O sistema de aquecimento com controlador PID, apesar de apresentar maior consumo médio, foi mais eficiente quanto ao uso de energia elétrica para produzir 1 kg de peso vivo (2,88 kWh kg Use of PID controller as efficient technology in heating system of swine nursery A B S T R A C TThe rational use of energy in swine nurseries can be made possible without affecting the productive performance of animals, aiming the sustainability of the sector. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of two technologies for temperature control of resistive heating system for swine nursery on the use of electricity by the systems and on the weight gain of the piglets. The evaluated systems were: overhead electric heaters with PID (proportional, integral and derivative) control and suspended electric heaters with thermostat. The experiment was conducted during the winter period between May and September 2013. The comparison criteria were: electricity consumption (kWh), specific consumption (kWh kg ). The heating system with PID controller, although showed a higher average consumption, was more efficient as the electricity used to produce 1 kg of body weight (2,88 kWh kg ) and for weight gain of piglets (7,3 kg) compared to the system with thermostat (3,98 kWh kg -1 , 1,03 R$ kg -1 and 5,2 kg, respectively). ABSTRACT:In animal farming, an automatic and precise control of environmental conditions needs information from variables derived from the animals themselves, i.e. they act as biosensors. Rectal temperature (RT) and respiratory rate (RR) are good indicators of thermoregulation in pigs. Since there is a growing concern on animal welfare, the search for alternatives to measure RT has become even more necessary. This research aimed to identify the most adequate body surface areas, on nursery-phase pigs, to take temperature measurements that best represent the correlation of RT and RR. The main experiment was carried out in a climate chamber with five 30-day-old littermate female Landrace x Large White piglets. Temperature conditions inside chamber were varied from 14 °C up to 35.5 °C. The measurements were taken each 30 minutes, over six different skin regions, using a temperature data logger Thermochron iButton ® -DS1921G (Tb) and an infrared thermometer (Ti). As shown by the results, the tympanic region is the best one for RT and RR monitoring using an infrared thermometer (TiF). In contrast, when using temperature sensors, the ear (TbE) is preferred to be used for RT predictions and the loin region (TbC) for RR. KEYWORDS RESUMO:O controle automático e preciso do ambiente para animais de produção carece de informações e variáveis originadas dos próprios animais, tendo-os como biossensores. A temperatura retal (TR) e a frequência respiratória (FR) são bons indicadores da termorregulação de suínos. Porém, com a crescente preocupação em relação ao bem-estar animal, torna-se necessária a busca por alternativas à mensuração da TR. Com a presente pesquisa, objetivou-se identificar a região mais adequada para a aferição da temperatura da superfície corporal dos suínos, em fase de creche, e que apresentasse a melhor correlação com a TR e a FR. O experimento principal foi conduzido em câmara climática, com cinco leitões da raça Landrace x Large White, com 30 dias de idade, provenientes de uma mesma ninhada e do mesmo sexo (fêmea). As temperaturas ambientes utilizadas variaram de 14 °C a 35,5 °C. Realizaram-se medidas de temperatura repetidas em intervalos de 30 minutos, em seis diferentes regiões corporais, utilizando-se de dois métodos: via data logger de temperatura Thermochron iButton ® -DS1921G (Tb) e via termômetro de infravermelho (Ti). Por meio dos resultados, foi possível observar que a região timpânica mostrou--se como a melhor opção para acompanhamento tanto da TR quanto da FR via termômetro de infravermelho (TiF), enquanto que ao utilizar sensores de temperatura da superfície corporal, a melhor opção foi a orelha (TbE) para predição de TR, e a região do lombo (TbC) para predição de FR.
