Low-cost depth-cameras have been used in many agricultural applications with reported advantages of low cost, reliability and speed of measurement. However, some problems were also reported and seem to be technologyrelated, so understanding the limitations of each type of depth camera technology could provide a basis for technology selection and the development of research involving its use. The cameras use one or a combination of two of the three available technologies: structured light, time-of-flight (ToF), and stereoscopy. The objectives were to evaluate these different technologies for depth sensing, including measuring accuracy and repeatability of distance data and measurements at different positions within the image, and cameras usefulness in indoor and outdoor settings. Then, cameras were tested in a swine facility and in a corn field. Five different cameras were used: (1) Microsoft Kinect v.1, (2) Microsoft Kinect v.2, (3) Intel® RealSense™ Depth Camera D435, (4) ZED Stereo Camera (StereoLabs), and (5) CamBoard Pico Flexx (PMD Technologies). Results indicate that there were significant camera to camera differences for ZED Stereo Camera and Kinect v.1 camera (p < 0.05). All cameras showed an increase in the standard deviation as the distance between camera and object increased; however, the Intel RealSense camera had a larger increase. Time-of-flight cameras had the smallest error between different sizes of objects. Time-of-flight cameras had non-readable zones on the corners of the images. The results indicate that the ToF technology is the best to be used for indoor applications and stereoscopy is the best technology for outdoor applications.
Abstract. It is important to know the physical dimensions of livestock to properly design confined animal housing facilities as well as feeding and drinking equipment. An engineering standard for the dimensions of livestock and poultry published by ASABE reports swine dimensions that were originally published in 1968. Changes in animal husbandry practices for swine, such as improved and new genetic lines, nutrition and feed form, and improved facility and equipment design, make it necessary to validate or update these dimensions for modern animals. The objective of this study was to evaluate dimension data for the grow-finish stages of modern pigs. A total of 150 growing-finishing pigs were sampled at five approximate ages: 4, 8, 12, 16, and 20 weeks old (30 animals at each age). The animals equally represented three commercial sire lines (Landrace, Duroc, and Yorkshire), and equal numbers of barrows and gilts were sampled. Dorsal and lateral color digital and depth images were collected using a Kinect sensor as the pigs were held individually in a stanchion or scale, and the images were analyzed by manual and automated methods. Measured physical dimensions included height from top of back to the floor, length from nose to base of the tail, width at shoulders, jowl length, front leg height, body depth from top of back to lowest point of the belly, and others. It was determined that the conformation of modern pigs has changed from the dimensions reported in current engineering standards such that modern pigs tend to be wider (15.1%) and shorter in height (-10.2%) and length (-4.9% on average) between 4 and 20 weeks of age. These updated pig dimensions will enable engineers to better design modern swine equipment and facilities. Keywords: Depth sensor, Dimensions, Image analysis, Precision livestock farming, Swine.
ABSTRACT:In animal farming, an automatic and precise control of environmental conditions needs information from variables derived from the animals themselves, i.e. they act as biosensors. Rectal temperature (RT) and respiratory rate (RR) are good indicators of thermoregulation in pigs. Since there is a growing concern on animal welfare, the search for alternatives to measure RT has become even more necessary. This research aimed to identify the most adequate body surface areas, on nursery-phase pigs, to take temperature measurements that best represent the correlation of RT and RR. The main experiment was carried out in a climate chamber with five 30-day-old littermate female Landrace x Large White piglets. Temperature conditions inside chamber were varied from 14 °C up to 35.5 °C. The measurements were taken each 30 minutes, over six different skin regions, using a temperature data logger Thermochron iButton ® -DS1921G (Tb) and an infrared thermometer (Ti). As shown by the results, the tympanic region is the best one for RT and RR monitoring using an infrared thermometer (TiF). In contrast, when using temperature sensors, the ear (TbE) is preferred to be used for RT predictions and the loin region (TbC) for RR.
