Using PS-InSAR with Sentinel-1 Images for Deformation Monitoring in Northeast Algeria

Abstract: Constantine city, Algeria, and its surroundings have always been affected by natural and human-induced slope instability and subsidence. Neogene clay-conglomeratic formations, which form the largest part of Constantine city, are extremely sensitive to the presence of water, which makes them susceptible to landslides. Fast and accurate identification and monitoring of the main areas facing existing or potential hazardous risks at a regional scale, as well as measuring the amount of displacement is essential for… Show more

“…This sensor has several acquisition modes, including interferometric wide (IW), wave (Wave), extra-wide swath (EW), and strip map (SM). When comparing the IW mode to other acquisition modes, it was discovered that the IW mode requires more data processing for co-registration of images with a high precision of up to 0.001 pixels 74 . The 34 images from the ascending track (23 November 2019–23 December 2020) and 32 images from the descending track (20 December 2019–26 December 2020) were collected for this study.…”

“…Because SAR imagery has a high temporal and spatial resolution and a short returning time, it may be used to study subsidence events from satellites 75 . SARPROZ software ( https://www.sarproz.com/sarproz-faq ) was utilized for this research, which is highly beneficial for InSAR data studies and commercial software 74 . SARPROZ has been successfully used, for example, by Qin et al 76 to create a liquefication map of Hong Kong demonstrating the PSI’s precision to the millimeter level.…”

“…The focus here, in turn, is on a region where RS methods are not yet common. Indeed, the use of InSAR techniques in North Africa is scarcely documented in the literature: Fonseca [19] investigated failure mechanisms of DGSDs in the Rif Mountains (North Morocco) and Beladam et al [20] correlated surface displacements detected by InSAR with known landslides in Constantine (Algeria). Photogrammetry has been applied to aerial photographs to study the El Biar Landslide in Algiers, Algeria [21], but no other publication about North Africa used UAV images until the very recent paper by Bounab et al [22].…”
