Using data envelopment analysis to measure hotel efficiency in Crete

Abstract: The present paper studies the relative efficiency between hotels operating under a brand and hotels operating independently, in the island of Crete, Greece, using the Data Envelopment Analysis. Interestingly enough, we find that nationally branded hotels are the relatively most efficient; internationally branded are the least efficient, while those operating under a local brand and the independent ones lie in between. This efficiency ranking can be explained by the interplay between operating under a brand and… Show more

“…From the surrounding environmental factors, the vicinity of the seashore has the greatest impact on performance, while historical buildings and monuments do not have any impact (Shahroudi & Dery, 2011). Research in Crete has shown that nationally-branded hotels are most efficient, followed by local brand and independent hotels and internationally-branded hotels are the least efficient (Manasakis, Apostolakis, & Datseris, 2013). Sanjeev (2007) explored the relationship between the efficiency and size of hotels in India and found no clear link.…”

“…However, should also see, seaside tourism in coastal tourism, water sports and leisure and other projects and the ecological environment and ecological tourism resources development and utilization of effect are closely related [1]. In the study found that, at present China's coastal city of ecological tourism environment quality overall level is not high, and the gap between the cities, the people in the tourism development at the same time, seem to ignore the ecological tourism, as the development of tourism in the 21st century persistent target this consensus on human subjects, and in the field of ecological tourism research, seashore ecotourism research relative lag, less coastal ecological evaluation of the efficiency of tourism, the DFA method is used to carry out the evaluation of basic is blank [2].…”
