Efficiency in the hotel industry: an empirical examination of the most influential factors

Abstract: The purpose of this article is to provide insights into hotel efficiency and investigate which hotels are performing better. Hotel efficiency is examined using data envelopment analysis (DEA) and the outputoriented BCC model is applied on the hotels' internal accounting information. The study further explores whether there are differences in efficiency between hotels of different size and quality. The results show that average efficiency is high, but not all hotels are performing at their maximum efficiency. A… Show more

“…Examining Portuguese hotel chains via DEA, Barros et al (2011) suggest that there is no clear relationship between chain size and managerial efficiency in this case. Exceptions are Poldrugovac et al (2016) who find a difference in efficiency between small-and medium-sized hotels, although this difference disappears when these are compared with larger establishments and Such-Devesa and Peñalver (2013) who use the DEA approach to find that in the Spanish context, larger hotels have greater technical efficiency than smaller establishments. In the Spanish context, Arbelo et al (2018) find that larger hotels show more profit efficiency and suggest that part of this is due to increased economies of scale leading to reductions in costs.…”

“…Pada variabel jasa publik indikator yang terpenting adalah aksesibilitas terhadap pelayanan kesehatan. Menurut Poldrugovac (2017) hotel yang memimliki keterdekatan dengan rumah sakit akan memiliki nilai jual yang lebih tinggi dibandingkan dengan hotel yang berada di lokasi yang jauh dari rumah sakit. Kesuksesan investasi di bidang industri perhotelan sangat bergantung pada faktor lokasi (Yang, 2014).…”

“…In academic literature, efficiency analysis in the field of tourism has gained popularity in the previous century (since 1950). The majority of studies are concerned with the lodging sector (Poldrugovac, Tekavcic, & Jankovic, 2016;Barros, Dieke, & Santos, 2010;Pérez-Rodríguez & Acosta-González, 2007;Barros & Santos, 2006;Brown & Ragsdale, 2002), while the restaurant sector is somehow neglected (Planinc, Kukanja, & Planinc, 2018;Alberca & Parte, 2018;Kukanja & Planinc, 2018b;Reynolds & Biel, 2007) although it is a vital part of the tourism industry.…”
