Construction and Demolition Waste Management Actions and Potential Benefits: A Perspective from Trinidad and Tobago

A study was conducted to identify the primary sources and types of construction and demolition (C&D) waste, determine current and potential management actions which can be applied to the respective wastes, and assess the potential benefits, barriers, and recommendations towards the implementation of a C&D waste management plan in Trinidad and Tobago-a Caribbean Small Island Developing State (SIDS). This process is lacking locally, and will benefit decision makers and other stakeholders in proper management of C&D waste. Currently, the primary method of waste disposal is landfilling. The structured questionnaire survey method was used to collect the data, and data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and one-way ANOVA with appropriate post-tests. Results showed that wood, plastic, cardboard, gypsum board, and steel were identified as the most wasted materials on site, with the top sources being attributable to design, operations, and residual causes. It can be inferred that if materials are not being reused, they are being landfilled, as these were the two primary waste treatment methods identified as being used for all materials. If waste management practice gathers enough support from all respective authorities and stakeholders, the general consensus is that all materials listed have recycle/reuse potential in Trinidad and Tobago. The top agreed upon advantages of C&D waste management were all directly related to sustainability, and the barriers to implementation identified were related to general lack of support from respective stakeholders and authorities. From the overall results, it can be concluded that there is not enough evidence to suggest that larger contractors have more positive attitudes and behaviors towards C&D waste management. Although the data are local, the findings from this research can be used as guidelines by the other Caribbean SIDS nations in formulating/comparing their own waste management practices.

The objective of this study was to establish the influence of strategy implementation on sustainability of community based tourism in the coast region of Kenya. The target population was 193 members of community based tourism units in coastal Kenya as a representative sample. Stratified random sampling method was used to classify the thirteen community groups into a single stratum. The study used structured questionnaires and documented literature as the main tools for both primary and secondary data collection. The findings indicated that strategy implementation had a positive relationship with sustainability of community based tourism. The variables were found to be normally distributed and hence no significant differences at 95% confidence level. The study established a strong linear relationship existed between strategy implementation and sustainability of community based tourism. Information from the study confirms enterprises require strategy implementation for continued sustainability of their enterprises.

Bu çalışmanın amacı, öğretmenlerin radyasyon kavramına karşı tutum ve bilgi düzeyleri belirlemeye çalışmaktır. Araştırmanın örneklemini İç Anadolu'nun batısında yaklaşık ikiyüzellibin nüfuslu bir ilde ilkokul ve ortaokullarda farklı branşlarda çalışan 274 öğretmen oluşturmuştur. Çalışmada verilerin toplanması amacıyla kişisel bilgi anketi ve daha önce Torun, Yalçin ve Altun Yalçin (2011) tarafından geliştirilen radyasyon kavramına karşı tutum ölçeği kullanılmıştır. Elde edilen veriler SPSS 15 paket programına aktarılarak analiz edilmiştir. Örneklemdeki öğretmenlerin cinsiyet durumlarına, mezun oldukları fakülte durumlarına, çalışılan kurum durumuna ve çalışılan okul kademesi durumlarına göre değerlendirme yapılıp elde edilen görüşlerinin karşılaştırılmasında bağımsız t-testi uygulanmıştır. Örneklemdeki öğretmenlerin eğitim verdikleri branş ile ilgili grup değişkenleri arasında farklılık olup olmadığını belirlemek için tek yönlü varyans analizi (ANOVA) kullanılmış, mezun olunan üniversitenin bulunduğu bölge ve öğretmenlerin eğitim durumlarıyla ilgili grup değişkenleri arasında farklılık olup olmadığını belirlemek için ise Kruskal-Wallis testi kullanılmıştır. Araştırmadan elde edilen sonuçlara göre öğretmenler arasında eğitim düzeyi, mezun olunan üniversitenin bulunduğu bölge, mezun olunan fakülte, çalışılan kurum, eğitim düzeyi değişkenlerine göre anlamlı bir fark bulunmazken, öğretmenlerin cinsiyetleri ve eğitim verdikleri branş değişkenlerine göre anlamlı fark bulunmuştur.
