Use of Sugarcane Bagasse for Particleboard Production

Abstract: The use of agricultural residues for particleboard manufacturing increases their value-add and help meet the growing demand of raw materials for the panel industry. Accordingly, the aim of this study was to assess the quality of particleboards produced only with sugarcane bagasse or along with Pinus and Eucalyptus wood. The experimental design consisted of 5 treatments: T1) Eucalyptus panels, T2) Pinus panels, T3) sugarcane bagasse panels, T4) 50% Eucalyptus and 50% sugarcane bagasse panels, and T5) 50% Pinus … Show more

“…There was a tendency of the panels with smaller particle size to present lower values for TS2h and TS24H. Mendes et al (2014) found 4.5 and 17.8% for TS2h and TS24h. Brito et al (2020) obtained average values of 14.41 and 44.75% for panels made up of bagasse only for TS2h and TS24h, respectively.…”

“…The modulus of rupture values were compatible with those reported in the literature. Mendes et al (2014) found 12.5 MPa and Brito et al (2020) obtained 11.77 MPa. Panels with higher compaction rates can damage the particles, reducing their resistance and causing a reduction in the mechanical properties of the panels (Milagres et al, 2019).…”

“…Agroforest and industrial waste are also used for the manufacture of particleboards, since they not only add value to the product, but also provide sustainability, reduce environmental pollution problems and help particleboard industries meet their demands (Negrão et al, 2014). Some studies have pointed to the use of sugarcane bagasse for the manufacture of particleboards (Fiorelli et al, 2013(Fiorelli et al, , 2016Mendes et al, 2014). However, one of the technological obstacles for its use in reconstituted particleboards is its dimensional instability in comparison to particleboards manufactured from wood particles (Freire et al, 2011).…”
