The use of drones to study marine animals shows promise for the examination of numerous aspects of their ecology, behaviour, health and movement patterns. However, the responses of some marine phyla to the presence of drones varies broadly, as do the general operational protocols used to study them. Inconsistent methodological approaches could lead to difficulties comparing studies and can call into question the repeatability of research. This review draws on current literature and researchers with a wealth of practical experience to outline the idiosyncrasies of studying various marine taxa with drones. We also outline current best practice for drone operation in marine environments based on the literature and our practical experience in the field. The protocols outlined herein will be of use to researchers interested in incorporating drones as a tool into their research on marine animals and will help form consistent approaches for drone-based studies in the future.

Increase in Relative Abundance and Size of Snapper Chrysophrys auratus Within Partially-Protected and No-Take Areas in a Temperate Marine Protected Area

Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are known to contribute toward the conservation of marine biodiversity, particularly targeted fishery species. Snapper Chrysophrys auratus are an important recreational and commercial fish species in New South Wales (NSW), Australia, and despite fishery management for this species, they are considered "growth overfished" in this region. To assess how C. auratus respond to the implementation of an MPA with several no-take and partially protected areas in temperate NSW, we monitored their populations over a decade (2006)(2007)(2008)(2009)(2010)(2011)(2012)(2013)(2014)(2015)(2016)(2017) using baited remote underwater video systems (BRUVs). Surveys were conducted in the Port Stephens-Great Lakes Marine Park with BRUVs deployed on rocky reefs in depths of 20-50 m. Long term seasonal sampling (winter vs. summer) was undertaken at two locations (Broughton and Fingal Island), and changes in C. auratus abundance prior to, and 8 years after zoning implementation, were assessed between these two locations. In total, we sampled five no-take areas within the marine park and five comparative nearby partially protected fished areas and three sites located outside the marine park boundaries. The most pronounced changes in abundance and size structure for C. auratus were observed in the Broughton Island no-take area where numbers increased almost 3-fold (2.91 times) over 8 years of protection. Relative abundance showed seasonal variation at two locations, and we consistently recorded increasing abundance within no-take areas at Broughton and Fingal Island compared to nearby sites open to fishing. Surveys across the five no-take areas found a significant increase in the abundance of C. auratus, whilst the five partially-protected locations in the marine park still recorded higher abundances than sites outside the marine park. In addition, length measurements from stereo-BRUVS indicated that C. auratus were significantly larger in no-take areas compared to partially-protected areas in the marine park and sites outside the marine park. This study demonstrates how the implementation of the marine park and the protection afforded by no-take and partially-protected areas provides refuge for this important fishery targeted species.

The advent of electronic tagging has seen vast advances in our understanding of marine top-order predator movements over broad spatial scales. However, most studies are restricted to short temporal scales. We examined movements of 43 juvenile white sharks Carcharodon carcharias (1.7− 3.2 m total length) in eastern Australia via satellite-linked radio tags (SLRTs) and internally implanted long-life acoustic tags, the latter monitored by receiver arrays spanning a continental scale and across international boundaries. Although SLRT data were restricted to less than 2 yr, the study registered approximately 182 000 detections of acoustic-tagged white sharks on 287 receivers over 7 yr, with individual tracking periods of up to 5 yr. Data reveal complex movement patterns over distances of thousands of kilometres and 13° of latitude, with sharks ranging from the southern Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, to Tasmania and across the Tasman Sea to New Zealand. Sharks showed a variety of movement patterns, including annual fidelity to spatially restricted nursery areas, directed seasonal coastal movements, intermittent areas of temporary nearshore residency and offshore excursions into the Tasman Sea. Movements east to west through Bass Strait were restricted, further supporting the 2-population model for the species in Australian waters. The latitudinal range of movements increased with years at liberty, and female sharks were more commonly encountered than males in nearshore waters. Long-term monitoring of acoustic-tagged sharks via data sharing through collaborative national and international receiver arrays offers future pro mise to examine movements over periods relevant to ontogenetic changes and at scales providing context to interannual variability.
