Use of polycarbonate plastic products and human health

Abstract: As plastic and plastic products are being used in day to day at the cost of environment pollution, the human and wild life health and has become a global concern. Researchers found link between abnormal liver enzymes in the people and Bisphenol-A (BPA). Changes in insulin resistance, reproduction system, cardiovascular and brain function are also reported. BPA is used in the production of epoxy resins, polycarbonate resins, and polyester resins. BPA can leach out of certain plastic products including variety o… Show more

“…BPA can also be used as an antioxidant or as a plasticizer in other polymers (e.g., PP, PE and PVC) (Rani et al 2015). Several studies have shown that BPA can migrate out of PC and contaminate foodstuffs and drinks (Calafat et al 2008;Galloway 2015;Guart et al 2013), and lead to liver function alternation, changes in insulin resistance, development of offspring in the womb of pregnant women, reproductive system and brain function (Srivastava and Godara 2017). BPA acts as an agonist for the estrogen receptors, inhibits thyroid hormone mediated transcription by acting as an antagonist (Moriyama et al 2002), altered pancreatic beta cell function (Ropero et al 2008).…”

“…Polycarbonates—PCs—belong to the engineering thermoplastic materials widely tested and commonly used in the industry of medical devices. They are applied to produce artificial heart chambers as well as rings and handles which are elements of artificial heart valves, dialysis membranes and containers and optical and contact lenses [17,18]. Polycarbonates offer an unusual combination of strength, rigidity and toughness that helps to prevent potentially life-threatening material failures.…”
