Use of Burrows for Evaluating Rodenticide Efficacy in Urban Areas

Abstract: Conditions in urban environments often preclude the use of traditional research methods for determining rodent numbers and thus impede the efficacy determinations on rodenticides in research or management programs. However, in these situations the numbers of active rat burrows before and after bait placement provide a relative population measure. This procedure, used in field trials with Vacor (DLP787) acute rodenticide in selected blocks in Cleveland and Chicago, permitted an estimate to be made of a reductio… Show more

“…In addition, methods of obtaining data may influence findings. Reports from poison information centres (Haliburton and Buck 1983;Jackson 1983) may include unconfirmed poisonings and inquiries about toxins, with or without associated incidents. Data compiled from the records of diagnostic laboratories (Quick 1982;Blakley 1984) are based on cases investigated by chemical analysis, thereby excluding poisonings confirmed by other means or for which chemical analysis is unsuccessful or not available.…”

“…The economic magnitude and health problems associated with this rodent species emphasize the need to develop techniques for their management. Presently, the main approach used to tackle rodent problems all over the world is to reduce their population by killing them with rodenticides (Jackson 1979;Buckle 1994;Parshad 1999;Jain & Tripathi 2000). Poisons are useful for reducing high-density rodent populations (Singla & Parshad 2000), thereby immediately reducing damage.…”

“…If not, a new method for the species should be applied concurrently with another proven (but perhaps more difficult) method, or otherwise validated on the target species before being used exclusively for making management or research inferences.
