Due to the ongoing arrival of individuals, large urban areas are expanding while the daily life within them becomes increasingly demanding. These cities' authorities confronted many challenges in providing necessities for their citizens, such as water and food supply, energy, public transportation, road infrastructure, healthcare services, waste management, recycling, and storage facilities. Cities embrace novel technologies and innovative approaches to cope with these evolving circumstances. Cyber-physical systems, digitization, networking, cloud computing, the Internet of Things, and blockchains are valuable tools that enable the efficient functioning of smart cities. The subject matter of this article is very complex and covers several disciplines, such as management, transport, and information technologies. Few have mastered the necessary knowledge in all these areas. The authors wish that this multi-dimensional presentation of the current situation will be helpful to those who deal with the organization of life in cities, logistics, or the application of information technologies in business organizations, but also ordinary citizens who are not yet familiar with these problems. The article should allow the reader to see the complexity of last-mile delivery and encourage it to use its potential to get involved in solving this problem.

PurposeThe share of fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) in e-commerce has increased, particularly after COVID-19, alongside the growing volume of e-commerce transactions. The increased number of orders necessitates the optimization of delivery operations. This situation has made using different technologies in last-mile delivery processes necessary. Currently, used electric vehicles (EVs) play a significant role in integrating these technologies into delivery operations. Adapting to new technologies emerges as a critical need for small enterprises to survive in the face of advancing technologies. In this context, the main purpose of this paper is to examine and identify attitudes of small businesses toward EVs’ usage in last-mile delivery for FMCG.Design/methodology/approachThe theoretical frameworks commonly used in studies investigating new technologies, namely the theory of planned behavior (TPB) and technology acceptance model (TAM) have been employed. The analysis of the study was conducted using partial least squares-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) and the Smart PLS software package.FindingsWhen examining the results of the study, a significant and positive relationship was found between compatibility and enjoyment with perceived usefulness. Furthermore, a significant and positive relationship was identified between attitude toward use, perceived behavioral control and perceived usefulness. Ultimately, a strong relationship was found between intention, which is a precursor to active usage and attitude. Based on the obtained data, it can be concluded that EVs can be actively used in last-mile delivery in the future.Originality/valueIn FMCG processes in Türkiye, EVs are limitedly used in last-mile delivery operations. However, there are very few studies on the use of EVs in FMCG. Therefore, it is expected that the current research will contribute to the literature by providing information on the factors that influence the acceptance of EV usage and their implications. The TAM and TPB models were used in the current study.

In recent years, technological advancements have also influenced consumer behavior. One of the most significant developments in this regard is the metaverse. The metaverse, which has frequently captured the interest of experts, is a technological system that forms the basis of the current research. In this context, the present study examines the factors that affect the intention to use and acceptance of the metaverse system. The study constructs a research model using the Innovation Diffusion Theory (IDT) and the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) to investigate user acceptance of conducting e-commerce activities within the metaverse system. Within this framework, structural equation modeling has been utilized to explain the acceptance of usage by potential metaverse users. The proposed research model has been analyzed using the Smart PLS 3 software package. Among the independent variables of the research, a positive and significant relationship has been found between relative advantage as a mediator and the main variables of TAM. However, no significant relationship has been identified between complexity, another independent variable, and the main variables of TAM. Additionally, a significant relationship has been established between perceived compatibility and perceived ease of use. In this context, from a consumer perspective, when evaluated experientially (effort expended), the shopping experience in the metaverse system shows similarities with physical shopping, while no relationship has been found in terms of performance. The most significant contribution of the research to the literature is that attitude and intention, which are the most important antecedents of active usage of metaverse systems, exhibit a positive and significant relationship with all the variables in the relationship.
