Urticaria Associated with Amoeboid Forms of Blastocystis spp

Abstract: Blastocystis spp pathogenic potential remains controversial. Recently, many researchers have suggested the possible etiological relationship between symptomatic skin rashes and Blastocystic morphological forms, genetic diversity and microbiota interaction. A small observation series of acute and chronic urticaria caused by Blastocystic hominis in elderly patients has been herein presented. These cases emphasize the importance of adequate parasite verification under appropriate clinical settings and upon elimin… Show more

“…However, irritable bowel syndrome and urticaria sensitization were also reported. 7 , 8 Several genomic, in vitro, and in vivo studies have identified multiple virulence factors of Blastocystis sp. and demonstrated the parasite’s pathological effects on the intestine.…”

“…( 3 ) In comparison with other parasites, such as Giardia , Cryptosporidium , and Entamoeba , Blastocystis does not display morphologically virulent features such as flagella, although it secretes enzymes cysteine proteases and cathepsin B as putative virulence factors ( 4 , 33 , 34 ). Although the amoeboid form is usually detected in symptomatic individuals ( 35 , 36 ), no massive outbreaks associated with Blastocystis have been reported.…”

“…Other hypothesis suggests that Th-2 immune response activation is needed to mediate an increase in IgE antibody synthesis (16,17). Recently, it was proven that only the amoeboid form of Blastocystis spp.expresses pathogenic potential by adhering to the gut epithelial cells lining to enhance inflammatory cells recruitment (12,16). More than 95% of urticarial patientsshowed amoeboid form of the microorganism, which undoubtedly confirm their greater virulence (12,18).…”
