Introduction: China has been experiencing dramatic urbanization in parallel with its economic boom over the past three to four decades. The Yangtze River Delta (YRD), as the most important engine in the Chinese economy, has pioneered in the rapid urbanization road of China since the late 1970s. We quantified and compared the spatiotemporal patterns of urban expansion in six major cities in the YRD urban agglomeration between 1980 and 2015. Outcomes: We found that Shanghai, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Wuxi, Suzhou and Ningbo expanded by an annual rate of 5.4%, 5.9%, 9.6%, 7.4%, 6.3% and 8.1% from 1980 to 2015, suggesting larger cities generally possess lower growth rates. Spatiotemporal patterns of urban expansion are defined by multiple forces including physical conditions and urban planning and policy. The urbanization processes in Shanghai, Nanjing and Hangzhou generally conformed with the diffusion-coalescence theory as the number of patches (NP) and patch density (PD) of urbanized land peaked and the proportion of leapfrogging urban growth type began to decrease around 2005, which separating their urbanization processes into diffusion phase before and coalescence phase after. In contrast, Suzhou, Wuxi and Ningbo is either in the diffusion or in the transition phase from diffusion to coalescence, not showing temporal dynamics of diffusion-coalescence phase across the study period, which might be related to the fact that the urban areas in these three cities were more dispersive in space than that of other cities. Conclusions: These spatially explicit findings are the fundamental cornerstone to understand the characteristics, drivers and consequences of urban expansion in the urban agglomerations, and then detect the feasibility of general urbanization theories and further advance indepth theoretical understanding to support a sustainable urban future.

Abstrak. Kebutuhan lahan permukiman terus meningkat seiring dengan perkembangan kota. Tuntutan penggunaan lahan permukiman yang tidak dapat diakomodir oleh ruang kota menimbulkan perembetan kawasan ke wilayah pinggiran (urban fringe). Perkembangan wilayah pinggiran (urban fringe) mengakibatkan kenampakan bentuk morfologi tertentu. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah mengetahui bentuk morfologi kawasan permukiman urban fringe selatan Kota Surakarta. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode diskripsi dengan dua tahapan, (1) mengidentifikasi komponen bentuk morfologi yang terdiri dari penggunaan lahan, pola jaringan jalan, dan bangunan (pola dan kepadatan) dan (2) menganalisis bentuk morfologi kawasan permukiman urban fringe selatan Kota Surakarta dengan memadukan karakteristik komponen pembentuk morfologi. Hasil penelitian menunjukan pola penggunaan lahan campuran, pola jaringan jalan spinal, kepadatan beragam, dan pola bangunan heterogen. Karakteristik kenampakan komponen morfologi tersebut menunjukan bentuk morfologi gurita pada kawasan urban fringe selatan Kota Surakarta.Kata kunci : urban morfologi, urban fringe, permukiman, Kota Surakarta [Title: Morphological Shape of Urban Fringe Settlement in South Surakarta]. The requirements of settlement land continue to increase along with the development of the city. A Land use settlement demand that cannot be accommodated by the city space raises the development of suburban area (urban fringe). The development of suburban areas (urban fringe) results certain morphological forms. Hence, the purpose of this study was to determine the morphology of urban fringe settlement area in the South Surakarta. This study used descriptive method in two stages, (1) identification of morphology components consisting of land use, the pattern of road networks, and buildings (patterns and density) and (2) analyzing the morphology of the settlement area urban fringe in the South Surakarta by combining the characteristics of forming morphology components. The results showed the use of mixed land patterns, spinal road network patterns, and the density of diverse and heterogeneous buildings patterns. The morphological characteristic on the urban fringe area in the South Surakarta is octopus.

Spatiotemporal Dynamics and Spatial Determinants of Urban Growth in Suzhou, China

This paper analyzes the spatiotemporal dynamics of urban growth and models its spatial determinants in China through a case study of Suzhou, a rapidly industrializing and globalizing city. We conducted spatial analysis on land use data derived from multi-temporal remote sensing images of Suzhou from 1986 to 2008. Three urban growth types, namely infilling, edge-expansion, and leapfrog, were identified. We used landscape metrics to quantify the temporal trend of urban growth in Suzhou. During these 22 years, Suzhou's urbanization changed from bottom-up rural urbanization to city-based top-down urban expansion. The underlying mechanism changed from TVE (town village enterprise) driven rural industrialization to FDI (foreign direct investment) driven development zone fever. Furthermore, we employed both global and local logistic regressions to model the probability of urban land conversion against a set of spatial variables. The global logistic regression model found the significance of proximity, neighborhood conditions, and socioeconomic factors. The logistic geographically weighted regression (GWR) model improved the global regression model with better model goodness-of-fit and higher prediction accuracy. More importantly, the local parameter estimates of variables enabled us to exam spatial variations of the influences of variables on urban growth in Suzhou.
