A comparative study of spatiotemporal patterns of urban expansion in six major cities of the Yangtze River Delta from 1980 to 2015

Abstract: Introduction: China has been experiencing dramatic urbanization in parallel with its economic boom over the past three to four decades. The Yangtze River Delta (YRD), as the most important engine in the Chinese economy, has pioneered in the rapid urbanization road of China since the late 1970s. We quantified and compared the spatiotemporal patterns of urban expansion in six major cities in the YRD urban agglomeration between 1980 and 2015. Outcomes: We found that Shanghai, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Wuxi, Suzhou and N… Show more

“…Coalescence, on the other hand, consists of infilling existing built-up areas to form larger patches or outward expansion. This theory has been tested and results supporting both and against the hypothesis were generated [1,19,39,40]. Nevertheless, the extrapolation of the theory is still debatable.…”

“…There are numerous studies on the expansion of urban land in single metropolitan regions [3,4,6,15]. Changes and differences in the patterns of urban growth have been observed over time among some megacities [1,[16][17][18][19] and scattered pattern of urban growth has been confirmed in small and mid-sized cities [20][21][22]. However, particularly in Africa, urban growth patterns and population dynamics of cities, varying in size are not well-documented.…”

“…Consequently, exploration of the urban spatial dynamics and landscape structures analysis continues to of interest due to its high importance in creating sustainable cities.Several studies have investigated the effects of urban expansion on the landscape composition and configuration [10][11][12], investigating the existing and projected urban land dynamics [13], and exploring the patterns and possible drivers [14,15]. However, most of these studies have concentrated on large metropolitan regions due to their significant influences on socio-economic and environmental conditions [14,16]. In contrast, the smaller cities and towns, where scattered urban growth is more prominent [17][18][19], have been given little attention [20][21][22].…”

“…(2) Many scholars have used one or more indexes of annual expansion area [24,[33][34][35], expansion rate [24,33,[36][37][38], growth rate [34,35], and expansion intensity [19,25,39] to study the speed of urban expansion, but few studies have combined the two indexes for analysis. Shi et al [40] introduced a composite index combining the two parameters of growth rate and form and defined the urban expansion type by this composite index.…”
