Uptake and depuration of 241Am, 239+240pU| 238Pu, 137Cs and 106Ru by Mytilus edulis under natural stress

Abstract: Rates of uptake of 2 4 1~m , I3'Cs and ' 0 6~u by both the soft tissue and the shell of transplanted Mytilus edulis L. were determined; soft tissue data are compared to theoretically derived values based on the biological half-life and the steady state concentration of these isotopes. The rates of loss of 2 4 1~m , U 9 + 2 4 0~~, 2 3 8~~, I3'Cs and I o 6~u by M. edulis under conditions of stress, manifest as extended periods of shell closure as a consequence of high ambient concentrations of copper and zinc an… Show more

“…On the contrary, the loss of 241Am in mollusc soft tissues is much slower than that of 137Cs (The biological half life is 300 d) (6). This slower elimination of americium may be attributable to biological turnover of cellular organelles and of soluble proteins.…”

“…The uptake and retention of 241Am and 137Cs in the tissues of bivalve molluscs have been studied in a series of laboratory experiments and these have shown major differences in their tissue distributions and retention times. Concentration factors were about 10 times higher for 241Am than for t37Cs (6). The highest concentrations of 241Am were found in the visceral mass (digestive gland) of bivalve molluscs (7,8,9,10) while 137Cs was uniformly distributed among different tissues (11,12).…”

“…The biokinetics of cesium in different mussels were studied [4][5][6]. In the present work, the biokinetics of Cs in four compartments in the green-lipped mussel Perna viridis, namely, gill, viscera, adductor muscle, and foot, were studied.…”
