Up-regulation of MPK4 increases the feeding efficiency of the green peach aphid under elevated CO2 in Nicotiana attenuata

Abstract: Previous research has shown that elevated CO2 reduces plant resistance against insects and enhances the water use efficiency of C3 plants, which improves the feeding efficiency of aphids. Although plant mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) are known to regulate water relations and phytohormone-mediated resistance, little is known about the effect of elevated CO2 on MAPKs and the cascading effects on aphids. By using stably transformed Nicotiana attenuata plants silenced in MPK4, wound-induced protein kina… Show more

“…NaMPK4 -silenced plants ( irNaMPK4 ) are impaired in their response to ABA- and H 2 O 2 -mediated stomatal closure. NPK4 is also involved in defense against aphids, invading pathogenic bacteria and Alternaria alternata (tobacco pathotype) ( Slavov et al, 2004 ; Hettenhausen et al, 2012 ; Sun et al, 2014 ; Guo et al, 2017 ).…”

“…For the bioassay, differing from the in vitro detached leaves and artificial diets 73 , 85 , we applied the pure compounds to the living plant leaves to provide aphids with the most realistic feeding conditions. All the bioassays were performed on alfalfa plants in a greenhouse.…”

“…In response to aphid feeding, plants produce phytohormone-dependent defences (Goggin et al 2007). Under an elevated CO 2 concentration, such defences could be altered or increased, and thus affect the amount of time spent by the aphids searching for phloem (Guo et al, 2014(Guo et al, , 2017. Because the aphid stylet is of a finite length, changes in the depth to which the insect must penetrate to reach the phloem, as well as changes in the quality of the phloem sap, might also modify aphid feeding performance (Faria et al, 2007;Guo et al, 2013).…”
