Unified Residue Method for Design of Compact Wide-area Damping Controller Based on Power System Stabilizer

Abstract: A wide-area damping controller (WADC) is effective in damping inter-area low-frequency oscillation (LFO), if the time delay in a wide-area control loop can be properly handled. In order to simplify the WADC design and enlarge the delay adaptation range, the classic power system stabilizer (PSS) is adopted, and a new unified residue (UR) method is proposed for compact WADC design. The strategy of control loop selection is also improved by modifying the relative residue index based on a few dominant oscillation … Show more

“…From Table 1, the first step of the system emergency condition is concentrated through IAO identification schemes. In this case, researchers present different techniques as correlation coefficient [2,8,9], residue [3], gradient [4], eigenvalue analysis [5], WAMS-based data [6] and MIMO technique [7] to identify IAO in power systems. By identifying an IAO, the next step is devoted to controller performances through damping the oscillation.…”

“…The grid-connected inverters are the crucial component that delivers renewable energy and energy storage to the grid. The grid-connected inverter should play a more critical role in the power system [1][2][3][4][5][6]. Due to the negative damping effect of the power system, the phenomenon of low frequency oscillations (LFOs) often occurs on the transmission lines with long distances, heavy loads or weak connections.…”

“…Design of WADCs considering time delays has been addressed, such as designing robust controllers to treat the time delay as a part of the system uncertainties [21][22][23], compensating the time delays by designing a delay compensator [24][25][26][27], delay-dependent stability analysis of WADC and using the calculated delay margins as an additional performance index [13,28,29]. However, those results usually only consider single time delay case or simplify multiple different time delays as a single time delay by assuming the time delays in different communication channels are the same.…”
