Unexpected red blood cell antibody distributions in Chinese people by a systematic literature review

Abstract: All the commonly seen RBC antibodies are reported in Chinese people. However, anti-K is very rare. Besides, anti-Mur, anti-Di(a) are clinically significant. We propose that in China, the antigens on the antibody screening cells should include those recommended by the AABB and British Committee for Standards in Haematology, as well as Di(a) and Mur antigens.

“…Acute hemolytic reactions generally occur due to ABO incompatibility and causes immunologic destruction of red cells. However, this complication can also occur due to minor antigens not detected by current screening techniques [23,24]. Anaphylactic reactions rarely occur.…”

“…Anti‐D, ‐K, ‐E, ‐Fy a , and ‐Jk a antibodies are the most commonly reported alloantibodies in different studies . Anti‐E is the most common antibody in the Chinese population (26.4%‐41%) . Anti‐E can cause severe hemolytic transfusion reactions and HDN .…”

“…Antibodies against these antigens are often the most commonly reported RBC antibodies among patient populations in Southeast and East Asia . The actual prevalence of these antibodies in affected Asian populations is not clear, however, in view of the lack of a uniform policy for antibody screening or usage of relevant reagent cells for their detection.…”

“…Deciphering the clinical significance of these antibodies is further complicated by their heterogeneity, with a large proportion of them attributed to being naturally occurring. Despite this, there have been several anecdotal reports, especially within the Chinese medical literature, of hemolytic transfusion reactions and hemolytic disease of newborn attributable to anti‐Mur and anti‐Mi a …”
