Abstract-Layered video coding creates multiple layers of unequal importance, which enables us to progressively refine the reconstructed video quality. When the base layer (BL) is corrupted or lost during transmission, the enhancement layers (ELs) must be dropped, regardless whether they are perfectly decoded or not, which implies that the transmission power assigned to the ELs is wasted. For the sake of combating this problem, the class of inter-layer forward error correction (IL-FEC) solutions, also referred to as layer-aware FEC (LA-FEC 1 ), has been proposed for layered video transmissions, which jointly encode the BL and the ELs, thereby protecting the BL using the ELs. This tutorial aims for inspiring further research on IL-FEC/LA-FEC techniques, with special emphasis on the family of soft-decoded bit-level IL-FEC schemes.

Abstract-In this paper, a novel unequal error protection (UEP) scheme, which is constructed from protograph double low-density parity-check (PD-LDPC) codes, and tailored for medical images is proposed to minimize the end to end image distortion over additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. The UEP scheme is carried out by adopting different coding strategies in terms of the different significant levels and different entropies of image data streams from discrete cosine transform (DCT). A typical radiography image and other two gray-scale images are exploited in the simulation. The experimental results show that the proposed scheme can evidently increase the peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) value of the received images and reconstruct the transmitted images with good quality even at a very low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). In particular, the proposed scheme outperforms the other UEP schemes based on regular D-LDPC codes and turbo codes by up to 0.5 and 2.5 dB in the SNR when the PSNR of the reconstructed images reach the expected upper bound, respectively.Index Terms-Unequal error protection (UEP), Protograph Double LDPC (PD-LDPC), Radiography image.

In wireless sensor networks (WSN) it is necessary to use very simple codes for transmission of information since the nodes in these networks have usually only limited energy available not only for transmission but also for processing. On the other hand, common codes do not usually take into account the fact that in case of telemetric information the weights of individual orders are not equal and errors in different orders cause different deviations from correct value. In this contribution, new very simple codes for transmission of telemetric information on WSN will be presented, which take into account the abovementioned requirements.
