Understanding the collaborative-participatory design

Abstract: In this study, the role of collaboration in design is discussed, placing emphasis on how to include end-users in the development process. The study is based on a literature review focusing on aspects of collaboration in design, usability and human factors. Thereby, it introduces, compares and contrasts the characteristics of both collaborative and user-centered design perspectives, leading to the collaborative-participatory design approach. Finally, the advantages, disadvantages and precautions of implementing… Show more

“…In order to refine the algorithm content and the simulated SAMI-Self-Care tool display and function iteratively, we used a collaborative-participatory approach. This approach engaged stakeholders in a shared co-designing process and helped ensure that the product will meet real-life needs and be adopted [ 32 , 33 ]. The team formulated a scenario for a symptom management dilemma that would allow patient users to traverse the self-care management algorithms so that self-management recommendations could be generated.…”

“…Drivers could tend to focus on a single interaction element and not adopt a holistic vision. Moreover,Scariot, Heemann, and Padovani (2012) highlighted the potential for social desirability bias, i.e. users tend to direct answers to what they believe the researcher wants to hear or what is more socially accepted.…”

“…Iterative focus groups have been used successfully in model generation 35 and healthcare end-user prototyping, 36 and to some extent our chosen method draws parallels to user-based usability methods 37 and collaborative participatory design. 38 Nevertheless, our focus group mainly included CI fellows at the start of their informatics careers. As such, this model should be juxtaposed with the domains, tasks, and KS statements from Silverman's 2019 DoP analysis, in which respondents were more broadly distributed across age groups (35- 8 with the recent DoP analysis may add value to our subspecialty as we continue to define and refine the breadth of CI practice.…”
