Understanding the association between dietary antioxidants, redox status and disease: is the Total Antioxidant Capacity the right tool?

Abstract: Total Antioxidant Capacity (TAC) considers the cumulative action of all the antioxidants present in plasma and body fluids, thus providing an integrated parameter rather than the simple sum of measurable antioxidants. The capacity of known and unknown antioxidants and their synergistic interaction is, therefore, assessed, thus giving an insight into the delicate balance in vivo between oxidants and antioxidants. There is new evidence indicating the importance of understanding the mechanisms of the homeostatic … Show more

“…Oxidative stress occurs when the body's natural antioxidants like catalase, superoxide dismutase and a combination of peroxidase enzymes are insufficient to neutralize the free radicals (Halliwell and Gutteridge 1989). Increasing antioxidant defenses through food is considered crucial in maintaining human health and in disease prevention (Serafini and Del Rio 2004). A pioneering approach in this direction is the development of functional foods containing probiotic, prebiotics or their combination (synbiotics) capable of exerting antioxidant activity and nullifying the oxidative stress in the host.…”

“…On the contrary, rosemary is rich in oxides and monoterpene which stimulate nervous system under the control of the parasympathetic nervous system, enhancing memory and concentration (Serafinim & Rio, 2004 In spite of the facts that there were some limitations that the number of the subjects was too small and the subjects were all females, it was possible to confirm that the aromatherapy alleviated stress levels without much inconvenience to the subjects. As a researcher, .…”
