Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence, risk factors, and effects of primary nocturnal enuresis (PNE) on physical and mental health in young adults in mainland China.Methods: An anonymous questionnaire was used to collect information including the sociodemographic characteristics, history of PNE, family history, daytime voiding symptoms, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) scores, Self-Esteem Scale (SES), and Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS). A total of 22,500 university students from 23 provinces and 368 cities in mainland China were included.Results: In total, 21,082 questionnaires were collected, and 20,345 of them qualified for statistical analysis. The PNE prevalence was 1.17%, and the distribution of monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis (MNE) and nonmonosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis (NMNE) was 66.1% and 33.9%, respectively. In total, 28% of respondents with PNE reported bedwetting daily, 31.6% between 1 and 7 times weekly, and 40.4% between 1 and 4 times monthly; 80% of PNE cases had no history of treatment. The prevalence of PNE in patients with a family history, frequency, urgency, urinary incontinence, and recurrent urinary tract infections was significantly higher than in those without these conditions (P<0.001). PNE was significantly correlated with the PSQI total score (sleep quality) (P=0.011). The SES score was lower and the SDS was higher (P<0.001) in the PNE group than in those without PNE.Conclusions: In mainland China, the PNE prevalence among young adults was found to be high, and PNE had significant effects on physical and mental health. Risk factors included a family history, daytime voiding symptoms, and lack of treatment.

Treatment response for nocturnal enuresis in Taiwanese children: A comparison of medical departments

Purpose: This retrospective study aims to evaluate the medical treatment response, treatment choice, and medication adjustment during a clinical follow-up in Taiwanese children with nocturnal enuresis (NE). Materials and methods: A total of 287 children diagnosed with NE were included in the study. Patients’ characteristics, treatment response, and medication adjustment after the second clinic visit were analyzed. The study also compared treatment options chosen by different medical departments. Results: Of the 287 children analyzed, 56.8% received medical treatment, 68.8% were older than 7 years (P < 0.001), and 45.6% were initially treated with desmopressin. The presence of daytime symptoms did not significantly affect the prescription of medication at the first clinic visit (P = 0.817). However, 76.9% of children with daytime symptoms who were initially treated with desmopressin needed medication adjustment during their second clinic visit (P = 0.01). Urologists were more likely to prescribe medications than other medical departments at the first clinic visit (P < 0.001). Conclusion: Almost half of the Taiwanese children with NE (46%) in this study had a satisfactory treatment response after the initial treatment. Urologists were more likely to use medications as their initial treatment strategy. The limitation included bias from heterogeneous study population and limited information of pretreatment urodynamic or imaging studies. Further education is required for both general public and medical departments to improve the treatment outcomes of children with enuresis.

Background: Nocturnal enuresis (NE) is intermittent urinary incontinence during sleep at children aged five years old or more after exclusion of organic diseases. NE has a negative impact on life quality of children and their families. The aim of this work was to find out the prevalence of nocturnal enuresis and its socio-behavioral risk factors among primary school children in Abo Homous, Elbehira, Egypt. Methods: This cross sectional study was carried-out in Abo Homos, Elbehira governorate. It included (106) primary schools with total number of (65,045) students distributed over 52 urban and 54 rural schools. Data were collected via a predesigned self-administered questionnaire sheet; part 1: Questions related to students as [Age, gender, demographic and student characteristics, student’s diseases], part 2 [Questions to assess familial factors] and part 3 [Question to assess criteria of NE in the studied population]. Results: The prevalence of nocturnal enuresis was 13.9%. Nocturnal enuresis was observed more in younger age groups of 6 and 7 years 23.2% & 21.2% respectively. There was no statistically significant association as regard age, gender or residence. Urinary tract infection, constipation, and caffeine beverages consumption significantly associated with NE. Family history of NE was positive in 29.1% of cases. Deep sleep and exposure to school or home (problems/violence) related significantly with occurrence of NE. Level of education and work status of parents, number of persons per room, and socioeconomic status significantly associated with occurrence of NE. Conclusions: Prevalence of nocturnal enuresis is significantly associated with younger age, urinary tract infection, constipation, and caffeine beverages consumption, deep sleep, exposure to school or home (problems/violence), level of education and work status of parents, number of persons per room, and socioeconomic status.
