Um estudo sobre a vitimização para a cidade de São Paulo

Abstract: A study about the victimization in the city of São Paulo. This paper applies the crime economics theory to Brazilian data. Following Becker (1968), Hinderlang et al. (1978) and Cohen et al. (1981), we tested the microeconomic factors that influence crime and victimization. For this end, the two waves of research of victimization of the Instituto Futuro Brasil, 2003 and 2008, were used in an effort to identify the determinants of victimization and police notification, using probit model. “…According to the British Crime Survey 19, only 39% of crimes are reported to law enforcement agencies in the United Kingdom. Instituto Futuro Brasil 20 revealed 68% underreporting in the city of São Paulo, consistent with the findings from the British survey. The main reasons identified by international studies for victims not to report crimes 19 have to do with the lack of severity of some crimes and a lack of trust in the police.…”

“…This is unsurprising since younger individuals tend to be exposed in environments that have a higher risk of victimization. This age relationship was also verified in Madalozzo and Furtado (2011) for robbery, auto theft, and physical aggression. The same relationship between age and both robberies and home burglaries was found by Justus and Kassouf (2013).…”

“…Social capital also affects victim behavior. Madalozzo and Furtado (2011) point out that analyzing the relationship between social capital and victim behavior is complex, since there is no consolidating theory capable of substantiating the behavior of the victim to provide a basis for empirical analysis. A theory that offers a basis for empirical analysis of the relationship between social capital and victim behavior was proposed by Cohen, Kluegel and Land (1981) which composes what are known as life-style theoretical models, which are referred to in this paper as the CKL model 1 .…”

“…This extensive literature includes studies by Sparks (1981), Miethe and McDowall (1993), Levitt (1999) and Gaviria and Pag es (2002), all presenting relevant empirical results. In Brazil, Carneiro (2000), Beato et al (2004), Gomes and Paz (2008), Carvalho and Lavor (2008), Madalozzo and Furtado (2011), and Justus and Kassouf (2013) also analyzed this issue. However, none of them performed empirical modeling using only individual data collected in rural areas.…”
