Ultrasound and dual X-ray absorptiometry densitometry in women with hip fracture

Abstract: To assess the usefulness of the measurement of the os calcis by ultrasound, a method that probably reflects bone quality as well as density, we have studied 54 women with hip fracture of the proximal femur and a control group. Ultrasound evaluation of the os calcis [broadband ultrasound attenuation (BUA), speed of the sound (SOS), and a combined index ("stiffness")], and bone mineral density (BMD) determination over the proximal femur by dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) were performed. Weight, BMD, and ultrasou… Show more

“…3 and Table 4 show that the BMD of the total skeleton was similar in the Buenos Aires study [7] and the USlEurope women. Similar values from the Buenos Aires and US population were also found for the ultrasound evaluation of the calcaneus [8].…”

“…The subject has been recently reviewed [3]. A short number of reports dealing with bone mass measurements [4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12] and thefrequency of osteoporotic fractures [13][14][15][16][17] in relatively limited areas and populations will be reviewed here. Tables 2-4 and Figs.…”

“…This is not stiffness in the true biomechanical sense that indicates the stressj strain relationship of a bone, but a derived index of bone defined by the manufacturer. 9 'Stiffness' is expressed as a percentage relative to the mean value for young normals and it derives approximately two thirds of its value from the mean of the BUA and one third from the mean of SOS measurements. BUA, SOS and 'stiffness' have been found to correlate with the bone mineral density measurements and to give a clinical index of fracture risk in otherwise healthy populations.…”
